Chapter 294 The Very Special Drinks
Mia’s POV
“Has the bartender boarded the ship?” Taylor’s voice carried clearly across the marble bathroom.
“Completely. Who would turn down a five–thousand–dollar opportunity? He’ll make sure they get special drinks.”
The sound of a powder compact clicking shut echoed through the bathroom, followed by the metallic twist of a lipstick tube being sealed.
“How long will the pills take to kick in?” Ketty asked, her voice pitched lower now, more conspiratorial.
“Twenty to thirty minutes, depending on how much they ate today. So we need to get back there and make sure they finish drinking.”
Twenty to thirty minutes. Pills. Roofies.
The sound of high heels clicking against marble grew louder as they moved toward the door. Taylor’s laugh drifted back toward the stalls.
“This is almost too easy,” she said. “Mia always was pathetically trusting.”
I flushed the toilet. I washed my hands thoroughly.
I tidied my hair, smoothing down the strands that had escaped my ponytail, and checked my makeup.
I made my way back to Scarlett, who was exactly where I’d left her, gesticulating wildly while telling what appeared to be an increasingly elaborate story to our bartender. Her martini glass was nearly empty, and there was a fresh one waiting beside it.
“Mia!” she called out when she spotted me. “Perfect timing. Jake here was just telling me about his side car as a sculptor. Apparently, he works with clay and male nudes.”
Jake, so he is the bartender who’d taken a five–thousand–dollar bribe to drug us. He smiled at me with practiced charm. “Your friend was just saying how much she appreciates art.”
“Thank you,” I said to Jake, my voice steady. “This looks perfect.”
I silently searched the room for Taylor and Ketty’s positions, turning slightly.
It didn’t take long to spot them.
Taylor was sitting at a high table near the back corner of the bar, positioned where she could observe the entire
room.
Ketty was closer to the bar, perched on a stool about twenty feet away, where she had a clear line of sight to Scarlett and me. She was trying to look casual, scrolling through her phone.
“Mia?” Scarlett’s voice.
I turned back to her, forcing a smile. “Just admiring the décor. This place has interesting lighting.”

“It does,” she agreed, following my gaze around the room. “Very film noir. Like the kind of place where mysterious things happen.”
Jake reappeared in front of us, polishing a glass with unnecessary attention. “Can I get you ladies anything else? Maybe some appetizers? You should definitely keep drinking on a full stomach.”
“We’re fine,” I said, lifting my glass toward my lips.
I pretended to take a sip, tilting the glass so the liquid touched my mouth but not allowing any to pass my lips.
“Mmm,” I said, setting the glass down. “Delicious.”
Jake’s smile widened with satisfaction. “Glad you like it. That’s our signature mix.”
I bet it was.
Scarlett, meanwhile, had picked up her fresh martini and was taking generous sips while continuing her animated conversation. I needed to warn her, but I couldn’t do it here, not with Ketty watching our every move and Jake hovering nearby.
“Scar,” I said, touching her arm lightly. “Come with me.”
She looked puzzled.
“And bring your drink?”
“YOU ARE BEING WEIRD,” she said, sliding off her stool and gathering her things.
As we moved away from the bar, I could feel Jake’s eyes following us.
I picked up both my glass and Scarlett’s abandoned martini.
I began walking slowly toward Taylor’s table. Scar followed. She didn’t know what I was going to do but she trust
