Alexander’s small body felt cooler against my chest as I carried him back to the car. The fever medication had started working, bringing his temperature down.
I secured both boys in their car seats, adjusting Alexander’s seatbelt carefully around his limp form. His breathing was deeper now, more peaceful. The flush had faded from his cheeks, leaving him looking pale but no longer burning up.
Ethan immediately reached across the space between their seats, his small fingers finding Alexander’s hand. Even in sleep, Alexander’s fingers curled around his brother’s, their hands clasping together.
I sat behind the steering wheel for a long moment, not starting the engine.
The hospital parking garage was dimly lit, filled with the echo of footsteps and the distant sound of ambulances arriving at the emergency entrance. Through the concrete walls, I could hear the muffled chaos of the hospital continuing its never–ending work of healing and loss.
The nurse’s words kept replaying in my mind. Kyle lying unconscious on that gurney, surrounded by medical equipment and strangers. No one to hold his hand. No one to worry about him the way I was worrying about
Alexander.
Had something happened to Catherine?
She had wiped away my tears when Kyle disappeared four years ago.
The twins had been so small then, barely two months old. Alexander had still been struggling with feeding issues, his tiny body working so hard just to grow. Ethan had been the calmer baby, but even he had cried constantly those first few weeks.
Catherine had come to see them, arriving at my apartment with an enormous basket filled with baby clothes and toys and all the expensive things that grandmothers buy when they want to spoil their grandchildren.
She looked at the twins, reaching out to touch Alexander’s tiny fist with one perfectly manicured finger.
“Catherine,” I’d started to say, but she’d held up her hand to stop me.
“I don’t know where he is, Mia,” she’d said, her voice breaking. “I swear to you, I don’t know what happened to my son. But if I ever find out–if I ever discover what he’s done or where he’s gone–I will tell you immediately.”
I’d been crying by then.
“I’m so sorry,” she’d said, dabbing at my cheeks with gentle hands. “I’m so sorry that Kyle became such an irresponsible person. Such a coward. You shouldn’t be crying over someone like that anymore.”
“Something happened to him,” I’d insisted through my tears. “Kyle wouldn’t just disappear. He wouldn’t abandon his children. Something must have happened.”
Catherine had kept wiping away my tears, her own eyes bright with unshed emotion.

Then she’d gathered her things and left, and I’d never seen her again.

I’d tried calling her several times over the following months. Each time, I’d gotten the same response from her housekeeper: Mrs. Branson was no longer in the country.
At the time, I’d assumed she’d gone to Europe, maybe to stay with relatives.
But now, I am not sure.
Had Catherine been coughing that day? There had been something fragile about her. She’d seemed… diminished somehow.
“Mama?” Ethan’s voice pulled me back to the present. “Are we going home now?”
I looked at my boys in the rearview mirror. Alexander was still sleeping deeply, his fever finally broken. Ethan was fighting to keep his eyes open.
“Yes, baby,” I said, starting the engine. “We’re going home.”
The drive back to our apartment building was quiet except for the soft sounds of the twins‘ breathing. By the time I pulled into our parking garage, both boys were fast asleep, their hands still clasped together between their car seats.
I didn’t want to wake them. They looked so peaceful, so innocent in their sleep.
Instead, I sat in the car, watching them sleep.
After what seemed like an hour, Alexander wake up.
“Mama?” Alexander’s voice was soft, drowsy. “Are we home?”
“Yes, sweetheart,” I said, turning to look at him. “How are you feeling?”
“Better,” he said, though he still looked pale and tired. “My head doesn’t hurt anymore.”
“That’s good. The medicine worked.”
Ethan was stirring too, blinking slowly as he took in their surroundings. “Did I fall asleep? I wanted to stay awake to take care of Alexander.”
“You did take care of him,” I assured him.
“Really?” Ethan sat up straighter. “How do you know?”
“Because that’s what love does,” I said simply. “It helps people feel safe, even when they’re sleeping.”
I managed to get both boys upstairs and into their own beds without much protest. Alexander was still weak from his fever, and Ethan was exhausted from the late–night hospital adventure. They were asleep again within minutes of their heads hitting their pillows.
I tucked them in carefully, making sure they each had their favorite stuffed animals and that the night light was positioned just right to chase away any potential monsters.
