Chapter 303 Something special
Mia’s POV
I looked at the flowers that had been delivered.

White gardenias mixed with deep purple irises, wrapped in kraft paper with a simple silk ribbon. Not the typical roses or lilies that most men defaulted to.
“No card?” I asked Camille, who was hovering in my doorway with obvious curiosity.
“None that I could find,” she said, stepping closer to examine the arrangement. “But they’re gorgeous. Very sophisticated choice.”
I lifted the bouquet, breathing in the sweet. The smell transported me to the summer evenings, honeysuckle climbing over garden walls.
I knew it had to be Thomas.
He was the only person who would choose something so thoughtful.
I placed the flowers on the windowsill where the afternoon light would catch them. The purple irises seemed to glow, their color shifting as clouds moved across the sun outside.
Then I continued working.
The residential renovation I was designing had been challenging me for weeks, but today something
had clicked.
I pulled up the original blueprints on one monitor while sketching modifications on my tablet. The main staircase could be preserved but opened up, creating a focal point in the entry hall. The kitchen needed to be completely reimagined.
My coffee grew cold as I worked. I sketched sight lines and traffic patterns, calculated square footage, adjusted proportions. This was what I loved about architecture–the moment when scattered ideas suddenly crystallized into something cohesive and beautiful.
My phone buzzed with a text from my mother around three o’clock.
“Can my grandsons stay for dinner and a sleepover?
I typed back quickly: “Of course, Mom. But promise you will keep them away from Mrs. Hans and her marriage commentary.”
“Don’t worry,” she replied. “I’ve learned my lesson about little ears and big mouths.”
I smiled. Then I put my phone aside.

By the time I felt I had finally sketched out everything I had in mind, it was already dark.

I looked up from my computer screen, blinking as my eyes adjusted to the reality of my office. The building was silent around me, that particular quiet that only came after everyone else had gone home. My desk lamp created a small pool of warm light in the darkness, and I could see my reflection ghostlike in the black window behind my desk.
It was past dinner time. I saw that all the other office staff had already left.
I had made plans for dinner with Thomas, but I hadn’t noticed the time.
Guilt hit me immediately.
I started to dial his number, but before I could hit call.
I walked out and found Thomas sitting outside the door in his suit.
He was leaning against the wall opposite my office, his long legs stretched out in front of him,. His tie was slightly loosened.
“Have you been waiting here the whole time, Thomas?” I felt a bit guilty. “Why didn’t you come in?”
Thomas looked up at me with that warm smile. “I didn’t want to interrupt your creative process.”
I felt even worse. “You could have just come in anyway. How long have you been sitting out here?”
“About an hour,” he said, reaching out to tuck a strand of hair behind my ear. “But it’s fine, Mia. I brought some work emails to catch up on. Besides, I could hear you typing and muttering to yourself through the door. You sounded happy.”
“Thomas…” I started, but he shook his head.
“I guess you were immersed in your work,” he said simply.
I still felt a little discouraged. “You could have just come in and told me, Thomas. I don’t want you to wait for me like this.”
Thomas just stepped closer, his hands finding my waist, pulling me against his chest. “Hey,” he said softly, his voice muffled against my hair. “It’s okay. I chose to wait. I wanted to wait.”
“But-”
“No buts,” he said, kissing my forehead. “Now, are you hungry? Because I was thinking we could go home and I could cook dinner for you.”
“That sounds perfect,” I said, gathering my things from my desk. “What did you have in mind?”
“Something special,” Thomas said with a mysterious smile.
