The real Sophie Field—a petite brunette who looked nothing like Taylor–had returned from a two- year stay in Switzerland where she’d been recovering from a skiing accident that had left her with traumatic brain injury. She’d been in a specialized rehabilitation facility, completely unaware that someone had been using her identity to claim an inheritance worth over three billion dollars.

“Ms. Field’s legal team has provided extensive documentation proving her identity and whereabouts during the time the imposter claimed her inheritance,” the article stated. “The fraud appears to have been orchestrated through a complex web of forged documents and insider knowledge of the Field family’s private affairs.”

I scrolled down to see a photo of the real Sophie Field standing beside her attorneys. She was tiny, maybe five feet tall, with intelligent dark eyes. Next to her photo was a shot of Taylor being led away in handcuffs, her blonde hair disheveled, her face twisted with rage.

My phone buzzed with another news alert: “Multiple Arrests Made in Sophie Field Identity Theft Case.”

The second article was longer, more detailed. Taylor had been arrested again, this time on federal charges of identity theft, wire fraud, and money laundering. But she wasn’t alone. Ketty Morrison- Taylor’s friend from high school who had confronted me outside the bar–had also been arrested, along with several other people I didn’t recognize.

The investigation had apparently been going on for weeks. “The scheme appears to have involved multiple co–conspirators,” the article stated. “Among those arrested is Kevin Morrison, an attorney who had been filing false legal documents, and several individuals who provided false witness statements claiming to know the impostor as the real Sophie Field.”

Kevin Morrison. Ketty’s husband, probably. The web was larger than I’d imagined.

The real Sophie Field had returned just days after Kyle’s reappearance at the cruise party where Taylor had announced her engagement to “Jackson Maxwell.” Days after Victoria’s arrest for fraud.

I thought about Kyle’s appearance at the hospital, his hollow cheeks and sunken eyes. About his mother’s mysterious death. About the elaborate charade he’d maintained as Jackson Maxwell, positioning himself close enough to observe Taylor’s schemes.

Had Kyle orchestrated this?

I stood by the window for a long time after that, watching the rain.

The sky was beginning to lighten by the time I heard movement from the bedroom. Alexander’s voice, groggy and confused: “Mama? Where are you?”

I hurried back to find him sitting up on his mattress, his hair sticking up in all directions.

“I’m here, baby. I was just getting some water.”

“I had a weird dream,” he said, rubbing his eyes. “We were in a big house, and there were lots of rooms, and I couldn’t find Ethan.”

My chest clenched. The same dream, essentially. A maze of rooms, searching for family.

“Dreams can be scary sometimes,” I said, settling back down on my mattress. “But you’re safe here. We’re all safe here.”

Ethan stirred at the sound of our voices, and within minutes both boys were fully awake and ready to start the day. Madison woke more slowly, sitting up cautiously and looking around as if she needed to reorient herself to where she was.

“Good morning, Madison,” Alexander said cheerfully. “Did you sleep okay? Sometimes the first night in a new place is weird, but our room is pretty good for sleeping once you get used to it.”

Madison nodded, still clutching her small backpack. “I dreamed about my daddy,” she said quietly.

“Good dreams or sad dreams?” Ethan asked with the matter–of–fact concern of someone who

understood that dreams could be complicated.

“Good dreams,” Madison said. “He was singing to me.”

“That’s a good kind of dream to have,” I said, helping her untangle her hair from sleep. “Maybe we can write about that dream in your daddy book today.”

I kept the news off while they ate breakfast, but I could feel my phone buzzing insistently in my pocket with updates about the continuing arrests in the Sophie Field case.

“Mama, you keep checking your phone,” Alexander observed while spreading peanut butter on his toast with the concentration of a surgeon. “Is something important happening?”

“Just some boring grown–up stuff,” I said. “Nothing for you to worry about.”

But Madison had gone very still, her spoon hovering halfway to her mouth.
