The Unwanted Wife and Her Secret Twins (Mia and Kyle) novel Chapter 334

Chapter 334 Kyle, what are you doing here?

Kyle’s POV

The numbers above the doors counted down like a reverse timer: 8, 7, 6, 5. My reflection in the polished steel looked like a stranger.

I’d disconnected everything again after Morton left. The oxygen line, the heart monitor, the IV drip that had been feeding chemicals into my bloodstream. None of it mattered anymore.

The lobby was nearly empty at this hour, just a security guard reading a paperback novel and a janitor mopping floors with mechanical efficiency. The automatic doors parted with a soft sigh, releasing me into the December night.

A taxi idled at the curb, its driver smoking a cigarette while scrolling through his phone. I climbed into the backseat, giving Mia’s address in a voice that sounded foreign to my own ears. The leather seats were cracked and worn, smelling of previous passengers and artificial pine air freshener. As we pulled away from Mount Sinai, I watched the building shrink in the rear window until it was just another collection of lights in the city’s sprawl.

The driver kept glancing at me in the rearview mirror. I understood his concern. I looked like something that had crawled out of a morgue.

You okay back there, buddy?

Fine. The word came out hoarse, scraping against my throat like sandpaper.

He turned his attention back to the road, but I could see him checking the mirror every few blocks.

My phone buzzed insistently in my pocket. Probably Dr. Patel.

The building where Mia lived with our children came into view, its familiar brick facade unmarked by time or the weight of everything that had happened. I’d driven past this address countless times over the past four years, sometimes parking across the street just to watch windows that might contain glimpses of the life I’d chosen to abandon.

The taxi pulled to the curb and I handed the driver cash without counting it, stepping out onto the sidewalk that led to the entrance. The cold air filled my lungs again, carrying the scent of coming snow and the particular urban mixture of concrete and exhaust. I stood there for a moment, studying the building’s entrance, the neat row of buzzers beside the door, the warm glow of lights in windows where people were living their uncomplicated lives.

I saw Thomas.

Thomas Wallace.

Thomas Wallace stood near the building’s entrance, his hands shoved deep in the pockets. I could see the tension in his shoulders.

He looked tall, classically handsome in the way that photographs well, with the kind of bone structure that women found reassuring and men found annoying.

Thomas heard me approaching and turned, his expression shifting through several stages of recognition and surprise.

Kyle.

I nodded in acknowledgment, stopping about ten feet away from him.

He looked me over again. You lookThomas started, then stopped himself.

Like I’m dying?I supplied. That’s because I am.

I pulled a cigarette from the pack in my coat pocket. The flame illuminated both our faces briefly.

Thomas watched me smoke with the expression of someone witnessing selfdestruction in real time.

Kyle, what are you doing here?

I took another drag from the cigarette, letting the smoke burn down my throat before answering.

I could ask you the same thing.

Thomas’s jaw tightened slightly. I was visiting Madison. Checking to make sure she’s settling in okay.

At eleventhirty at night?

I brought some things she might need. Clothes, books.Thomas’s voice carried a defensive edge. I didn’t want to disturb Mia during the day when she’s managing three children.
