Chapter 339 Go back to the hospital
Mia’s POV
1 sat across from Kyle in my kitchen.
Kyle’s hands were resting on the table between us, and I could see the fine tremor that ran through his fingers. The IV site on his arm had begun to bruise more deeply, a purple–black mark.
“Mia,” he started, but I held up my hand.
“Wait.” I pushed back from the table, my chair scraping softly against the kitchen floor. “I need to check on them.”
pushed the door open just enough to slip inside, breathing in the familiar scent of bubble bath and the faint mustiness that seemed to cling to all children’s bedrooms. Both boys were asleep in their twin beds, Alexander on his stomach with one arm hanging off the mattress, Ethan curled into a tight ball with his favorite stuffed elephant clutched against his chest.
In the soft light from the hallway, they looked impossibly young.
I knelt beside Alexander’s bed, brushing a strand of dark hair away from his forehead. His face was peaceful in sleep. I pressed my lips gently to Alexander’s temple, breathing in the warm, sweet scent of his skin. He stirred slightly but didn’t wake, making a small sound.
And my little Ethan. My serious child who saw too much and felt everything. I touched his shoulder through the blanket, felt the steady rise and fall of his breathing.
“I love you,” I whispered against his hair. “Both of you.”
I stayed there for another moment, memorizing their faces. I made my way to the air mattress where Madison slept. She was curled on her side, her small backpack still within arm’s reach even though she’d been with us for days now.
Madison’s breathing was different from the boys‘–lighter, more careful, as if even in sleep she was listening for danger. I smoothed the blanket around her shoulders,
I kissed her forehead, tasting the salt of tears I hadn’t realized were falling. Madison mumbled something in her sleep, her hand tightening briefly around her backpack strap before relaxing again.
When I returned to the kitchen, Kyle was still sitting in the same position.
“Kyle.” I settled back into my chair, noting how he straightened immediately, trying to reassemble his composure. “You need to go back to the hospital.”
“No.”

“This isn’t negotiable. You disconnected yourself from life support equipment to come here and start a fight with my boyfriend. You’re barely breathing. ‘

“My body is dying,” Kyle interrupted, his voice flat. “The hospital can’t change that..”
I stared at him across the table.
“So that’s it? You’re just going to quit?”
“I’m not quitting. I’m accepting reality.”
Kyle looked away.
He was quiet for a long moment, his breathing the only sound in the kitchen. When he spoke again, his voice was softer, more uncertain.
“I don’t know how to be their father, Mia. I don’t know how to do this.”
“Nobody knows how to be a parent,” I said. “You learn.”
“I don’t have time to learn.” Kyle’s eyes closed.“I never meant for them to feel that way.”
Silence settled over us again.
“Go back to the hospital,” I said quietly. “Let them take care of you. Get whatever treatment.”
Kyle nodded slowly. “Okay.”
“Okay?”
“Okay.” He pulled one hand free from mine and reached into his jacket pocket, extracting something small and metallic. “But first, there’s something I need to give you.”
He placed the object on the table between us, and I recognized it immediately: a house key. But not just any key–this one was attached to a keychain shaped like a small butterfly, tarnished with age and wear. I’d made that keychain in a middle school art class, painted it bright blue and given it to my mother for Mother’s Day when I was thirteen.
“Where did you get this?” My voice came out barely above a whisper.
“The house on Elm Street,” Kyle said. “Your childhood home. I bought it from the estate when your father was arrested.”
