Chapter 344 Don’t you want to be our uncle?

“Are we ordering dinner now?” Alexander asked hopefully.
“Alexander, what kind of chicken do you want?” I said.
“The kind that’s crispy and comes with those little biscuits,” Alexander said without hesitation.
“They have a family meal,” Kyle said, studying the menu. “Feeds four to six people. Chicken, biscuits, mashed potatoes, coleslaw.”
“That’s a lot of food,” I said.
“We can have leftovers,” Kyle replied. “Kids like leftovers, right?”
“Kids like some leftovers,” I corrected. “These particular kids will eat the chicken and biscuits tonight and ignore everything else until it goes bad in the refrigerator.”
Kyle smiled, a real smile. “Then we’ll order extra chicken.”
I called in the order, arranging for delivery in forty–five minutes.
I called in the order, arranging for delivery in forty–five minutes. When I hung up, I found the children had arranged themselves in the living room with Kyle.
Alexander had positioned himself directly next to Kyle on the couch, chattering about his favorite foods with the kind of animated enthusiasm that usually meant he was working up to asking for something. Madison sat cross–legged on the floor nearby, her drawing pad open in her lap, but her attention was clearly focused on the adults rather than her artwork.
Ethan sat in the chair across from them, his posture rigid and formal. His dark eyes were fixed on
Kyle with an intensity.
“Uncle,” Alexander was saying, “do you like games? We have lots of games. Card games and board games and puzzle games and-”
“Why do you keep calling him Uncle?” Ethan interrupted, his voice flat.
Alexander paused mid–sentence, looking confused by the question. “Because he is.”
“He’s not really our uncle,” Ethan said, his gaze never leaving Kyle’s face.
“Ethan,” I said.
Alexander was already responding with the righteous indignation. “That’s not nice, Ethan. You’re being mean to Uncle for no reason.‘

“I’m not being mean,” Ethan said.
Kyle shifted slightly, “Ethan’s right. I’m not really your uncle.”
Alexander looked confused, his enthusiastic energy deflating slightly. “But… but that’s what we called you before. At the park.”
“I know,” Kyle said patiently. “Sometimes adults tell children to call them uncle or aunt even when they’re not family. It’s just a friendly way of talking. But if that doesn’t feel right to Ethan, he doesn’t have to use it.”
Ethan’s eyes narrowed.
“My name is Kyle,” Kyle continued, addressing all three children but keeping his attention particularly focused on Ethan. “Kyle Branson. You can call me Kyle, or Mr. Branson, or…” He paused, meeting Ethan’s hostile gaze directly. “Or nothing at all, if that’s what feels comfortable to you. There’s no wrong choice.”
“See?” Alexander said to his brother, though he still looked puzzled by the entire exchange. “Kyle is being nice. You can just call him Kyle if you don’t like Uncle Kyle.”
But Ethan just turned his head away.
Madison had been listening to this exchange with growing fascination. “Kyle,” she said experimentally, tasting the name. “That’s a nice name. I like how it sounds.”
“Thank you, Madison,” Kyle replied, his voice warming. “I like your name too. It’s very pretty.”
Madison’s cheeks flushed pink with pleasure. “My daddy picked it. Before he died.”
The room went quiet for a moment. Kyle’s expression grew soft with understanding.
“That’s a very special gift,” he said quietly. “I believe he loved you so much to name you Madsion.”
Madison nodded solemnly. “Mia says he would be proud of me.”
“I’m sure he would be,” Kyle said. “I’m sure he would think you’re perfect.”
The doorbell rang then. Our food had arrived.
I spread the containers across our coffee table, creating our usual casual dining arrangement, and watched as the children settled around it with their typical efficiency. Alexander immediately positioned himself next to Kyle.
Madison sat on Kyle’s other side. Ethan sat across from them.
Kyle helped them navigate their meal.

“Kyle,” Alexander said through a mouthful of biscuit, “do you have kids?”
“No,” Kyle said finally, his voice carefully neutral. “I don’t have children.”
“That’s sad,” Alexander said. “Kids are really fun. You would probably be a good dad because you’re nice and you know how to cut up chicken.”
Kyle’s smile was painful to witness. “Thank you, Alexander. That’s very kind of you to say.”
“Maybe you could get some kids someday,” Alexander continued.
“Alexander,” I said softly.
“Why would you want kids?” Ethan suddenly asked.
Kyle met his gaze steadily.
“Kids are a lot of work,” Ethan added before I interrupted, his tone suggesting he was stating obvious facts. “They cry and they cost money.‘
“Well,” Kyle said carefully, “Because loving them… that can make all the difficult parts feel like they don’t matter so much.”
“Kyle,” Alexander said as the meal wound down, “who do you love most in the whole world?”
I tensed, recognizing this question as one of Alexander’s favorites and dreading whatever complicated emotions it might unleash in our current situation.
Kyle was quiet for a long moment, his looking at Alexander. “That’s a very personal question, Alexander.”
“I know,” Alexander said cheerfully. “But I like personal questions. Do you want to hear who I love
most?”
