Mia’s POV
“Madison,” I said gently, “I need to talk to you about something.”
Her grip on the elephant tightened. “Am I in trouble?”
“No, baby. You’re not in trouble. You haven’t done anything wrong.” I reached out to smooth her tangled hair. “But Uncle Thomas is going to come pick you up this morning.”
“Why?”
“Some people who cared about your daddy want to talk to you,” I said. “They want to ask you questions about him, about your memories.”
Madison’s face went very still. “What kind of questions?”
“Questions about your family. About your mom and dad.”
“I don’t want to answer questions,” Madison said, her voice getting smaller. “I want to stay here with you and Alexander and Ethan.”
My heart cracked down the middle. “I know, sweetheart. I want that too.‘
“Then why do I have to go?”
“Grandma and grandpa want to hear you voice, I guess.” I said.
Madison sat down heavily on the kitchen floor, cross–legged, the elephant in her lap. “I don’t like.”
“I don’t like them either, sometimes.‘
We sat in silence for a moment. “Will I come back?” she asked finally.
“I hope so.
Madison nodded gravely, accepting this limitation. “If I don’t come back, will you remember me?”
The question destroyed me. “Madison,” I said, my voice thick with tears, “I will remember you forever. Every single thing about you.”
“And you’ll tell them about me? If I don’t come back?”
“Every day,” I promised. “Every single day. But I think you will come back very soon.”
Madison stood up, clutching her elephant. “I should get dressed.”
She walked back toward the bedroom. I followed, my heart breaking with every step as Madsion was

too obedient.
Soon, Alexander woke up chattering about dreams. Ethan was quieter, but he helped Madison pack her small backpack.
“Why are you packing?” Alexander asked, finally noticing the unusual activity.
“Madison has to go somewhere today,” I said carefully.
“Where?”
“To visit some people who knew her daddy.”
Alexander considered this. “Will she be back for lunch?”
“I don’t know, sweetheart.”
“Can we come visit her?”
Thomas arrived exactly at eight, looking like he hadn’t slept either. “Hi, Madison,” he said softly.” Are you ready?”
Madison looked at me, then at the twins, then back at Thomas. “I guess.”
Alexander, finally understanding what was happening, threw his arms around Madison with the fierce intensity. “I don’t want you to go,” he said, his voice muffled against her shoulder.
“I don’t want to go either,” Madison replied, hugging him back.
Ethan approached more carefully, but his goodbye was no less meaningful. He handed Madison a folded piece of paper. “I drew this for you,” he said quietly.
Madison unfolded the drawing–a crayon rendering of five stick figures and a dog standing in front of a house. Mia, Alexander, Ethan, Madison, and Thomas, with Gas sitting loyally beside them. A family portrait drawn by a child who understood that families could be chosen as much as born.
“It’s beautiful,” Madison whispered, refolding the paper carefully. “I’ll keep it forever.”
I knelt beside her, pulling her into my arms one last time. She smelled like the lavender fabric softener I used on her pajamas, like the strawberry toothpaste she preferred, like the particular sweetness that belonged only to little girl.
“Madison,” I whispered, “if you’re scared, or if you’re not happy where you are, you call me. Day or night, okay? Thomas has my number, and I will always answer when you call.”
She nodded against my shoulder.
Madison pulled back to look at me, her small face serious. “I love you, Mia.”
