Chapter 350 I don’t see Alexander and Ethan

I could smell snow coming in the wind that swept across the preschool’s playground. The kind of sharp, clean scent that promised the first real storm of winter.
Gas had been restless this morning, pacing by the apartment door while I’d prepared lunch boxes. Dogs sensed weather changes before humans did, and his anxiety probably meant the snow would start tonight. Alexander would be thrilled–he’d been asking every morning if today would be snowman weather.
Mrs. Okada stood near her daughter–in–law’s Honda, her granddaughter Sophie visible in the backseat. She waved when she spotted me, calling out in her careful English, “Mrs. Mia! Very cold today!”
“Hello, Mrs. Okada. Yes, snow tonight I think.”
“Good for children. They love snow.”
The main doors opened and children began streaming out in their winter coats and bright scarves. I spotted familiar faces immediately–Emma from Alexander’s art class, Jacob who lived in our building, Sarah with her characteristic pigtails.
But I didn’t see Alexander’s red winter hat. Or Ethan’s careful walk as he navigated through crowds. Or Madison’s quiet presence between them.
I moved closer to the exit, scanning the crowd more carefully. Children continued emerging from the building in their typical chaotic pattern, but none of them were mine.
“Mrs. Williams?”
I turned to find Ms. Rodriguez approaching from the parking lot rather than from inside the building, which was unusual. She typically supervised dismissal from the classroom doorway.
“Ms. Rodriguez, I don’t see Alexander and Ethan. Are they still inside?”
Ms. Rodriguez looked genuinely puzzled. “Mrs. Williams, you already picked up Alexander and Ethan. About an hour and a half ago.”
“What?” The word came out sharper than I intended.
“You came at 1:45 with Victoria for Madison’s emergency court proceedings. You said there was a family crisis and the boys needed to accompany Madison for emotional support.”
“Ms. Rodriguez, I’ve been at work all afternoon. This is the first time I’ve been to school today.”

Ms. Rodriguez’s face went through several changes–confusion, concern, then growing alarm as she processed what I was telling her.
“That’s… that’s not possible. You were here. You signed the pickup forms. You helped Alexander with his backpack when he forgot his lunch box.”
“I was not here.”
“But…” Ms. Rodriguez stared at my face as if seeing me for the first time. “You were wearing different clothes. And you had a mask on because you said you had a cold. But it was definitely you. Same voice, same way of talking to the children.”
My blood turned to ice. “What do you mean, exactly like me?”
“Same height, same hair, wearing clothes very similar to what you usually wear. She even knew the children’s names and their specific routines.”
“Ms. Rodriguez, I need to see the documentation immediately.”
“Of course. Let me get the files from the office.”
We walked quickly through the emptying hallways, our footsteps echoing against polished linoleum as the last of the regular dismissal crowd dispersed. The building felt different now–too quiet, missing the specific energy that my children usually brought to pickup time.
In the administrative office, Ms. Rodriguez pulled files from her desk with hands that trembled slightly. “Here are the authorization forms.”
The papers looked legitimate–official letterhead from Family Court, proper case numbers that matched Madison’s custody file, signatures that appeared authentic. But something about the formatting seemed too perfect, the signatures too consistent.
“Ms. Rodriguez, who exactly verified these documents?”
“I did. When Victoria and your representative arrived at 1:45, I reviewed all the paperwork according to our standard protocols.”
“Ms. Rodriguez, I need to see your security footage immediately.”
“I’ll contact Mrs. Patterson to access the system.”
Mrs. Patterson arrived within minutes, clearly flustered by the growing crisis. She led us to the security office where monitors displayed various angles of the now–empty school building.
“Here’s footage from the main entrance at 1:45 PM,” she said, navigating to the appropriate timestamp.

On the black and white monitor, I watched Victoria approach the front doors accompanied by a woman who made my breath catch. Even in the grainy security footage, the resemblance was unmistakable.
She wore a gray wool coat identical to mine, dark jeans that matched my preferred style, ankle boots that looked exactly like the ones in my closet. Her hair was styled in loose waves that perfectly mimicked my current cut.
The medical mask covered most of her face, but what I could see of her eyes and forehead suggested careful makeup application to enhance the similarity.
“My God,” Ms. Rodriguez whispered.
We watched Victoria and her accomplice enter the building, moving with the confidence of people who belonged there. They knew exactly where to go, exactly how to present themselves to achieve maximum credibility with school staff.
“Fast forward to when they left,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper.
The timestamp jumped to 2:03 PM. Victoria and my impersonator emerged from the building with three small figures walking between them.
Alexander held the stranger’s hand, but his posture suggested confusion rather than his usual enthusiastic trust. Even in the security footage, I could see his small face tilted upward toward the masked woman, asking questions she was clearly answering with reassuring nods.
