Chapter 356 I always wanted a dad
Mia’s POV
“Are you our dad?”
Kyle went completely still in his chair.
“Alexander,” Kyle said softly. “Would you like me to be your dad?”
Alexander studied Kyle’s face intently.
“I think so,” Alexander said finally. “You came to save us when the bad people took us. And you stayed here all night to make sure my fever went away. And you brought Gas to find us.” He paused, then added with devastating simplicity, “Dads are supposed to protect their kids, right?”
“Yes,” Kyle whispered. “Dads are supposed to protect their kids.”
“So you want to be our dad?”
Kyle’s eyes found mine across Alexander’s bed, a question and an apology and a thousand unspoken words passing between us.
“Alexander,” Kyle said. “I would be honored to be your dad. Yours and Ethan’s and Madison’s, if she’d like that too. I want to protect you and take care of you.”
Alexander’s face lit up with the kind of pure joy, “Really? You really want to be our dad?”
“More than anything in the world.”
Alexander seemed satisfied with this answer, settling back into his pillows with a sleepy smile. ” That’s good. I always wanted a dad. Ethan did too, but he was too scared to say it out loud.”
“Ethan was scared?”
“Not scared–scared,” Alexander clarified. “But worried that if he wanted a dad too much, it would hurt his feelings when one didn’t come. So he pretended he didn’t care.”
I closed my eyes briefly, my heart breaking for my little boys.
“But now we have you,” Alexander continued, his voice getting drowsy as the exhaustion finally caught up with him. “And you promise you won’t leave us again?”
“I promise,” Kyle said, kissing Alexander’s hair.
Alexander smiled sleepily. “Good. I’m glad you’re our dad now.”
Within minutes, Alexander had drifted back to sleep, his breathing deep and even, his small face

peaceful in the dim hospital light. Kyle and I sat in renewed silence.
“I should let you get some rest,” I whispered.
“Mia,” Kyle said softly, not moving from his chair. “Can we talk? Just for a minute?”
“Okay,” I said. “But not here. Let’s go to the hallway.”

The pediatric ward was quiet at this hour. We settled into chairs facing each other, the fluorescent lighting harsh against Kyle’s pale skin.
“Thank you,” I said again. “How did you find them?”
Kyle’s mouth quirked upward slightly. “Gas, actually. I brought him with me because I thought… I thought maybe he could track their scent or something. I know it sounds crazy, but I was desperate.” He rubbed his forehead wearily. “We were driving around the area where the last cell phone ping came from, and Gas started going crazy in the car. Whining and scratching at the windows. When I let him out at that intersection, he took off running straight toward the woods. I followed him, and he led me right to them.”
I heard familiar footsteps in the hallway behind us. I turned to see Thomas approaching, his usually perfect appearance disheveled, his face drawn with exhaustion and something that looked like guilt.
“Mia,” Thomas said as he reached us, his eyes moving between Kyle and me with careful assessment. “I came as soon as I heard. Are they all right?”
“They’re fine,” I said, standing to give him a brief hug. “Shaken up, but safe. Alexander’s fever broke a few hours ago.
“And Madison?”
“Stitches in her arm, but she’ll heal completely.” I studied Thomas’s face, noting the tension around his eyes, the way his hands were clenched at his sides. “Thomas, what’s wrong?”
