Alexander bounced slightly in his hospital bed, his natural enthusiasm overriding the heavy emotions of our conversation. “Are you going to help Kyle and Mama get back together?”

“Alexander,” I warned, but Sophie was already laughing.

“Oh, mon petit, I think they can manage that all by themselves. Sometimes grown–ups just need a little time to figure out what’s really important.”

She stood gracefully, smoothing down her impossibly elegant outfit with movements that looked choreographed. “First, I have a question for you.”

She moved to where Madison sat with her painting, crouching down to examine the little girl’s artwork with genuine interest. “This is beautiful, ma petite. Is this your family?”

Madison nodded shyly. “It’s me and Alexander and Ethan and Mia and Kyle and Gas. We’re all holding hands.”

“It’s perfect,” Sophie said softly, then straightened to face me. “Now, Mia, I want you to tell me all of you and Kyle.”

I glanced at the children, all of whom were suddenly paying very close attention to our conversation. “Sophie, this isn’t really the time or place-”

“Children,” Sophie announced, reaching into her apparently bottomless handbag, “I have candy. Very expensive candy from a shop in Brussels that requires appointments to purchase their chocolates.”

She produced three small boxes wrapped in gold foil, each one probably worth more than most people’s weekly grocery budget. “Why don’t you take these to the nurses‘ station and ask them to keep them refrigerated until after lunch? Hospital rules, very important.”

Alexander and Ethan exchanged glances. But the lure of Belgian chocolate was apparently stronger.

“Come on,” Ethan said to Madison, climbing down from his chair with his chocolate carefully cradled in both hands. “We can probably see Kyle from the nurses‘ station too.”

Madison gathered her painting supplies, tucking them carefully into her backpack before following the boys toward the door. As they left, I caught Alexander whispering to Ethan about whether they thought Kyle and I were going to “have a feelings talk” while they were gone.

Once we were alone, Sophie settled back into her chair and fixed me with an expectant look. “Now then. The truth, if you please.”

I sat down. “There’s no dramatic story, Sophie. We weren’t right for each other. We got married for the wrong reasons, stayed together out of obligation, and finally admitted it wasn’t working.”

“Bullshit,” Sophie said pleasantly.

I blinked, startled by the profanity delivered in her musical accent. “Excuse me?”

“Complete and utter bullshit. I’ve seen the way Kyle talks about you, Mia. Men don’t do that for women they married out of obligation.”

She leaned forward, her blue eyes intense despite her light tone. “Try again. What really happened?”

Her attitude toward gossip really reminds me of Scarlett.

“He married me because I was convenient,” I said. “I was his secretary, I was in love with him, and I was grateful enough to accept any terms he offered. Including a contract that explicitly forbade pregnancy.”

Sophie’s expression shifted, “And yet you got pregnant. And you divorced and ran! Oh my! What a love story!”

“Yeah, you could say in that way.” I forced a smile.

“Ah.” Sophie nodded as if something had just clicked into place. “I see. Now he is chasing after you for second chance.”

“He missed everything, Sophie. So maybe it’s not a love story.” I said.

“Can I tell you something about Kyle that you might not know?” she asked without turning around.

“I’m not sure I want to hear it.”

“He talks in his sleep.” Sophie’s reflection smiled in the window glass. “During the months when he was staying at my estate in Switzerland, recovering from the worst of his illness, he would have these conversations with you. Entire discussions about the children’s progress in school, about your architectural projects, about whether you were eating enough and sleeping well.”

She turned back to face me. “The nursing staff thought it was delirium from the medication. But I knew better. He was practicing.”

“Practicing what?”

“Conversations he would never have.”

“That doesn’t make it better, Sophie. If anything, it makes it worse. He chose to have those conversations with a hallucination rather than picking up a phone.”

“Because picking up the phone would have put you in danger,” Sophie said patiently. “We’ve been through this.”

“It’s all in the past,” I said, echoing the words I’d spoken to Sophie earlier. “Kyle is sick. That’s what
