“Thank you for fixing my drone,” Alexander said, his voice muffled against Kyle’s hospital gown. You’re the best fixer in the whole world.”
“You’re very welcome,” Kyle replied. “But you did most of the work yourself. You identified the problem, you read the manual, you asked good questions. I just had slightly steadier hands.”
Alexander pulled back to look at Kyle’s face. “Will you teach me how to fix other things? Like when my Legos break, or when my toy cars stop rolling straight?”
Kyle’s eyes found mine over Alexander’s head. “I’d like that very much“.

Before I could respond, Ethan stepped closer to the bed, his attention focused on something that had caught his eye. His small hand reached out to touch Kyle’s fingers where they rested on the hospital
blanket.
“You do that thing too,” Ethan said quietly, his voice carrying the wonder of someone who had just discovered they weren’t alone in the world.
“What thing?” Kyle asked, following Ethan’s gaze.
“When you concentrate on something hard, you touch your left eyebrow with your pointer finger,” Ethan explained, demonstrating the gesture on himself. “Like this. I do it too, but Mama says most people don’t notice.”
Kyle’s hand moved unconsciously to his eyebrow, performing the exact same motion Ethan had just described. His eyes widened slightly as he realized what his son had observed.
“I do do that,” Kyle said, his voice soft with amazement. “I’ve done it since I was little. My mother used to tease me about it.”
Ethan nodded solemnly. “Alexander doesn’t do it. Madison doesn’t do it. Just me. And you.”
sudden Kyle reached out slowly, as if he were approaching a wild animal that might bolt at any movement, and touched Ethan’s forehead with gentle fingers. “You have very good eyes,” he said quietly. “You notice things other people miss.
“Sometimes I notice too much,” Ethan admitted, leaning slightly into Kyle’s touch. “Mama says it’s okay to be curious, but sometimes I wish I didn’t see all the sad things,”
Kyle’s expression grew serious. “What kind of sad things?”
Ethan glanced at me, then back at Kyle. Without warning, Ethan stepped forward and wrapped his arms around Kyle’s waist, his small head fitting perfectly against Kyle’s chest.

Kyle’s arms came around Ethan automatically, one hand settling on the boy’s dark hair with the reverence of someone being given an unexpected gift. I watched his eyes close.
When Ethan pulled back, his serious dark eyes searched Kyle’s face with the penetrating attention he usually reserved for puzzles and problems that needed solving.
“What kind of sick do you have?” Ethan asked.
Kyle glanced at me, asking permission with his eyes. I found myself nodding.
“My immune system is confused,” Kyle explained,. “It’s supposed to protect me from germs and bad things, but instead it’s attacking the healthy parts of my body. The doctors call it an autoimmune disease.”
Alexander had been listening with growing distress. “Can’t you tell it to stop? Can’t you explain that it’s making a mistake?”
Kyle’s smile was gentle and heartbreaking. “I wish I could, buddy. But immune systems don’t speak the same language we do.”
The room fell quiet except for the soft beeping of Kyle’s monitors and the distant sounds of hospital activity in the hallway.
“Does it hurt?” Madison asked softly.
“Sometimes. But the doctors give me medicine to help with the pain.”
“Like the medicine that made you sleepy yesterday?” Alexander asked.
“Yes, like that medicine.”
Ethan was quiet for a moment, his small fingers tracing patterns on Kyle’s blanket.
“We’ll help,” he said simply. “We’ll help you fight it.”
Kyle smiled. “How will you do that?”
“We’ll visit you every day,” Alexander announced. “And we’ll bring you things that make you happy. Like pictures and stories and maybe some of Mama’s cookies.”
I felt my throat close with emotion. Sometimes I really thought children are like angels.
But Alexander turned his little head towards me,“and Mama you should get back together with Kyle. Auntie Sophia said love is an elixir that removes all your pains.”
At least I should be glad he still knows what a elixir is.
“And I’ll paint you pictures,” Madison added.
