“You had stolen all of that. You had the beautiful mother and the nice house and the father who loved you. And when I tried to take just a little piece of it for myself, you acted like I was stealing something that belonged to you. Like I didn’t deserve happiness too.”

I knew this was the last time we’d see each other, so I didn’t interrupt her.

“And what about me?” Taylor’s voice cracked. “What about what I needed? Do you think it was easy being the other woman’s daughter? Do you think it was fun having everyone whisper about how my mother was a homewrecker and I was the bastard child who destroyed the perfect Williams family?”

“But then I figured it out,” she continued. “I realized that the only way to heal the wound was to become you. If I could just… take your place, live your life, be everything you were supposed to be, then maybe the pain would stop.”

“That’s not how it works, Taylor.”

“Oh, but it is,” she said, her eyes brightening again. “It works beautifully. Every time I took something from you, I felt a little bit better. When I took your father’s attention, when I took your pendant and used it to make Kyle love me, when I took your first pregnancy away…’

She was moving again, pacing the small space like a caged animal.

“Do you know what it felt like,” she asked, “watching Kyle choose me over you? Seeing him believe my lies instead of your truth? Watching him walk away while you bled on those marble stairs?”

“You pushed me down those stairs.”

“Everything you had should have been mine! Including you babies! I was prettier, smarter, more interesting!”

The silence that followed was deafening. Taylor stood frozen in the middle of the room, breathing hard, her chest rising and falling rapidly. Her eyes had gone glassy, unfocused, like she was seeing something I couldn’t see.

“But it was never enough,” she whispered finally. “No matter how much I took, no matter how much I hurt you. You’re still doing just fine, as if what I did never hurt you.”

She turned to look at me then, and the expression on her face was so lost, so broken.

“I used to lie awake at night when we were teenagers,” she said, “imagining what it would be like to wear your skin. To crawl inside your life and zip it up around me like a costume. I used to practice walking like you, talking like you, smiling like you.”

“I memorized your favorite colors, your favorite foods, the way you tucked your hair behind your ear when you were nervous. I learned to copy your handwriting, your laugh, even the way you breathed when you slept. I thought if I could just be perfect enough, complete enough, maybe people would love me the way they loved you.”

She looked up at me. “But they never did.”

“You could have been yourself,” I said quietly.

Taylor laughed. “Myself? There is no myself. I’m your shadow. Your dark reflection. I’m everything you could have been if you’d been born on the wrong side of the betrayal, if you’d grown up knowing that love was conditional and safety was temporary and happiness was something other people got to keep.”

“Our father’s betrayal doesn’t excuse what you became. You have choices.”

Taylor’s expression darkened, the brief vulnerability disappearing like smoke. “You think I chose this? You think I woke up one morning and decided to become a Taylor Porter?”

“I think you had a choice every time you decided to hurt someone else instead of dealing with your own pain.”

“Oh, how noble,” Taylor sneered.
