Chapter 381 From the East

Scarlett buried her face in her hands. “This is not happening.”
Sophie clapped her hands together with delight. “Ah! So I was right! Morton, yes? Your deliciously tall, dark, and brooding ex-husband who looks like he stepped out of a particularly expensive advertisement for Swiss watches?”
“How do you know Morton?” I asked, because this conversation had taken so many turns I was getting dizzy trying to follow it.
“Oh, ma chérie, everyone in our circles knows Morton. He’s quite famous, actually-the billionaire who walked away from his father’s empire to become an independent investor. Very romantic, very mysterious. And those shoulders!” Sophie fanned herself dramatically. “The man could model for Michelangelo.”
“What’s not happening?” Alexander asked, because he was still trying to keep up with the adult
conversation.
“Auntie Scarlett is embarrassed because she kissed a man,” Ethan said matter-of-factly. “And Sophie can tell because of science.”
“Not science,” Madison corrected solemnly. “Magic. Sophie is definitely magic.”
“I am not magic,” Sophie protested, but she looked pleased by the assessment. “I am simply very observant and blessed with an exceptional sense of smell. It is a gift, really. Though sometimes a
curse.
She moved to the stove.
She turned to face me fully, her blue eyes losing their playful glitter. “Morton, which reminds me, ma chérie. I have news about Kyle.”
The kitchen went very quiet. Even the children seemed to sense that something important was about to happen.
“What kind of news?” I asked, though I wasn’t sure I wanted to hear the answer.
Sophie smoothed her hands over her silk blouse.
“I have found someone,” she said finally. “Someone who might be able to help him.”
“Sophie,” I said carefully, “Kyle’s condition isn’t something that can be helped with—”
“Ah, but that is where you are wrong!” Sophie interrupted, her excitement returning like a switch

being flipped. “Western medicine, yes, it has given up on him. But I have been doing research, making calls, consulting with people who know about… alternative approaches.”
She moved closer to me, her voice dropping to the kind of whisper usually reserved for sharing state
secrets.
“There is a man,” she said. “A healer from the East. From Tibet, actually, though he studied in India and China as well. His name is Dr. Tenzin Norbu, and he has been working with autoimmune conditions for over thirty years.’
Thomas looked skeptical. “Sophie, I understand wanting to help, but Kyle’s doctors have been very clear about his prognosis-”
“His Western doctors,” Sophie interrupted. “Who see the body as a machine with broken parts instead of understanding it as an integrated system of energy and spirit and physical matter.”
She pulled out her phone, a device so thin and elegant it looked like it had been designed by someone who viewed technology as jewelry.
“Dr. Norbu has had remarkable success with cases similar to Kyle’s,” she continued, scrolling through what appeared to be an extensive collection of notes. “Not cures, necessarily, but significant improvements. Patients who were given months to live have had years. Patients who were bedridden have returned to active lives.”
“Sophie,” I said gently, “that sounds wonderful, but—”
“But nothing!” Sophie’s voice rose with passionate conviction. “Mia, ma chérie, you believe in exceptions, yes? You told Kyle you believe in miracles. Well, perhaps this is your miracle.
She leaned forward, her eyes bright with something that looked like tears. “Dr. Norbu arrives in New York tomorrow morning. I have arranged for him to consult on Kyle’s case.”
The silence that followed was broken by Madison’s small voice.
“Is Kyle going to get better?”
All the adults turned to look at her. She had set down her marzipan flower and was staring at Sophie with the intense focus she brought to things that mattered deeply to her.
“We don’t know, sweetheart,” I said honestly.
“But we’re going to try everything we can to help him,” Sophie added firmly. “Because sometimes, ma petite, the impossible becomes possible when enough people believe it should happen.”
Alexander climbed down from his stool and moved to stand beside Madison, his small hand finding hers. “Kyle fixed my drone,” he said solemnly. “So we should try to fix Kyle.”

Ethan nodded. “It’s only fair.”
I felt my throat close with emotion as I looked at these three children who had somehow decided that Kyle’s survival was a matter of justice rather than hope.
Scarlett cleared her throat, the sound drawing everyone’s attention back to her. “About Morton,” she said quietly.
“What about Morton?” I asked.
“He’s… he’s outside. Waiting in his car. He wanted to know if it would be all right to come up and say hello to you and the children.”
Sophie’s eyebrows shot up toward her hairline. “Morton Hartwell is sitting in a car outside your building like a teenager asking permission to come to prom?”
“It’s not like that,” Scarlett said quickly, though her blush suggested it was exactly like that.
“Oh, ma chérie, it is exactly like that.” Sophie moved toward the window that faced the street, her heels clicking with purpose. “Which car? The Aston Martin or the Bentley?”
“How do you know what cars Morton drives?” Thomas asked.
