Chapter 388 We have no time

Mia’s POV

From the living room, Alexander called out: “Mama! Gas needs to go outside! He’s doing the pee-pee dance!””One second, buddy!” I called back, then returned my attention to Scarlett. “I have to go. Dog emergency.”

“Mia, so what about you and Kyle”

“He’s dying.”I said.

“That’s not an answer.

“It’s the only answer that matters. What good does it do to love or hate someone who’s going to be gone in one or two months? What am I supposed to do with that?”

Scarlett’s expression softened. “Live with it. Feel it.”

“You make it sound easy.”

“It’s not easy. I”

Gas barked again, more urgently this time.

“I really do have to go,” I said.

“Mia.”

“Yeah?”

“Kyle isn’t going to win you. You’re not a prize. You’re a person making choices about your own life. ”

“When did my Scar become so wise?”

“I am always wise.” She smiled. “Now go deal with your dog before he pees on your carpet.’

“Love you.”

“Love you too. Even though you’re a terrible friend who makes shit-eating jokes.”

I ended the call and set my phone down on the nightstand.

Gas’s barking had reached the pitch of genuine urgency.

I opened my bedroom door to find Alexander standing in the hallway, holding Gas’s leash in one hand and looking very serious.

“Mama, this is an emergency situation. Gas has to go right now or there will be consequences.”

“Consequences?”

“Pee on the floor. Possibly everywhere.”

“Right. Emergency. Got it.”

I grabbed my coat from the hook by the door-the same coat I’d worn to visit Victoria and Taylor yesterday, which felt like it had happened in another lifetime-and slipped on shoes without bothering to tie them.

“Can I come?” Alexander asked, already pulling on his jacket before I could answer.

“Sure. But we’re just going down to the courtyard and back. This is a quick mission.”

“All missions are quick until they’re not,” Alexander said with the gravity of a military general. “We must remain vigilant.”

“Where did you learn the word ‘vigilant’?”

“Ethan taught me. He said it means paying attention to things so bad stuff doesn’t happen.”

We made our way down the three flights of stairs, Gas pulling at the leash with increasing desperation. The morning air was cold enough that I could see my breath, but the sun was climbing higher, promising warmth later.

The courtyard behind our building was small-barely more than a patch of grass surrounded by chain-link fence-but it was enough for Gas to do his business.

Alexander watched Gas sniff around the perimeter with the focused attention he usually reserved for nature documentaries.

“Mama?”

“Yeah, buddy?”

“Is Kyle going to die? I hear you and auntie Scarlett said that.”

I looked down at my son. His small face was tilted up toward mine.

“I don’t know,” I said honestly.

“But he’s really sick.”

“Yes.”

“And when people are really sick, sometimes they die.”

“Sometimes.”

Alexander nodded slowly, processing this. “When Madison’s daddy died, she was really sad. She still gets sad about it sometimes.”

“I know.”

“If Kyle dies, will you be sad like Madison?”

I knelt down on the cold ground so we were eye to eye. “Yes. I would be sad.”

“Why? Do you love him?”

Alexander frowned, trying to work through the logic. “But You love Thomas. He’s your boyfriend. So you can’t love Kyle too.”

“Love is complicated, baby. It doesn’t follow rules the way you think it should. Sometimes you can love more than one person. Sometimes you can love someone even when you don’t want to. Sometimes love just stays in your chest even when it would be easier if it left.”

“That sounds confusing.”

“It is confusing. Even for grown-ups.

Gas finished his business and trotted back to us, tail wagging, looking very pleased with himself.

Alexander took the leash from my hand. “If Kyle does die, will we still remember him?”

“Yes. We’ll remember him.”

“Good. Because he fixed my drone. And he has the same eyebrow thing as Ethan.” He paused. “And I think maybe he really wants to be our dad. ”

My throat closed up.

“Come on,” I managed. “Let’s get back inside before we freeze.”

When we got back to the apartment, Ethan and Madison were awake and sitting at the kitchen table with the pancakes I’d started making what felt like hours ago but was probably only thirty minutes.

“You were gone a long time,” Ethan observed.

“Gas had a lot of business to attend to,” Alexander said seriously. “And Mama and I had an important conversation about love being confusing.”

“Love is always confusing,” Madison said, pushing her pancake around her plate. “That’s why people write so many songs about it.”

“How do you know people write songs about love?” I asked.
