“I have no idea, honestly. All I know is, they never came home last night.” Hal stuck out his lower lip, continuing to grumble.

Ivy’s nerves tightened. She was terrified the old lady would sense something was

off.

“Your mom and dad definitely came back,” she said, hugging him close and

smoothing her voice into the sweetest reassurance. “You must’ve fallen asleep and

didn’t notice.”

“But I didn’t see them this morning, either.”

“That’s because you slept in, and they’d already left for work.”

Halley mulled this over, still pouting. “Well, all they ever do is work, work, work. Even on weekends, they don’t spend time with me.”

Sure enough, Adela Ludwig, listening to her grandson’s complaints, grew suspicious again. “What on earth are Thad and Davina up to? Who has to work all weekend?”

She aimed the question at her husband.

Danny, reading the paper through thick glasses, didn’t bother looking up. “You know how it is-there’s always something going on at the office. Working weekends is practically the norm these days. And Davina’s job keeps her busy too. Maybe she’s just catching up with friends, having lunch, relaxing a bit.”

Ivy glanced at Danny, marveling at how smoothly he wove the lie. It was seamless-nothing out of place.

Adela still felt something wasn’t right, but when she thought it through, nothing seemed entirely out of the ordinary.

After a pause, she sighed, “Come to think of it, I haven’t seen Carla around these past few days. I wonder how her divorce case is going.”

“Mom, you just focus on getting better. Let the rest of us handle everything else,” Ivy said gently.

“She’s my daughter-how can I not worry? It’s bad enough she had to deal with Micah, and now Farley Shepherd turns out to be a monster. I trusted him for years, and look where that gót us. Shows you never really know someone.” Adela’s jaw was clenched with anger as she spoke of her son-in-law.
