Esther’s reply was calm, almost too calm. “See you tomorrow, Miss Rivers.”

Did you do anything that should get you fired?” Esther asked back, her tone almost like a challenge

Mia hesitated. “No,” she said softly, shaking her head.

“I just thought–” She stopped, unsure how to say it without making things worse.

*Because you’re my son’s ex?” Esther finished bluntly.

Mia’s lips pressed together. She didn’t answer, but her silence said enough.

“This is a workplace, Miss Rivers,” Esther continued, her voice firm but even. “Although I should put your past with my son into consideration when deciding whether to let you work in his company…But I’m going to trust you have no bad intentions coming here. Can f trust you on that, Miss Rivers?

Mia’s eyes widened. She nodded quickly. “I swear, I have no bad intentions at all.”

Esther studied her for another long second before giving the smallest nod.

“You are good at your job so far. I have no complaints. So, I see no reason to fire you…just yet.” She leaned back slightly. “But I do have a question.

Mia’s stomach dropped.

Her heart started pounding again, so loud she could almost hear it in her ears.

“Did you hurt my son on purpose? I just need one word. Yes or no❞

“No,” Mia said without hesitation.

Esther nodded once, almost to herself. “See you tomorrow, Miss Rivers. And one last thing..don’t let anyone push you around here. Everyone is employed just like you. Doing their jobs is what we pay them for.”

Mia’s eyes widened slightly. She was clearly talking about the workers who had dumped their work on her earlier.

She knew?

Of course she knew.

Well, today had been Christmas for them, their holiday is over starting tomorrow, nobody will be dumping their work on her again.

She wasn’t going to be anyone’s pushover- not ever again.

“Thank you, ma’am,” Mia said quietly.

She turned and walked out.

She didn’t know how to feel about how today had turned out.

Was she supposed to be relieved? Excited? Or… suspicious?

Her mind kept replaying every second of her conversation with Esther Blackwell.

Hurt Alex? The thought made her almost laugh out loud, except nothing about this was funny

Alex was the one who had hurt her. Not just once. He had torn her apart in a way that had left sears she still carried years later

I mean she has been having doubts since she heard Alex had cut ties with his father long ago….

Her chest tightened.
