To Love a Shadow, To Be the Sun novel Chapter 220

Elara ended the call and, without hesitation, blocked his number.

A heavy weight settled in Ryan’s throat, so crushing he could barely breathe.

As dusk fell, the ornate wrought-iron gates of the Lawrence family estate slowly swung open.

A Lincoln L5 glided toward the parking lot.

It passed right by Ryan without stopping.

Desperate, Ryan rushed forward, throwing himself in front of the car.

The driver slammed the brakes, visibly shaken.

Quincy Shelton lowered the passenger window and leaned out. “Mr. Ryan, this is dangerous. You should step aside.”

Ryan hurried to the window, glancing at the silent man in the back seat.

“There was a shootout at the toll station this afternoon. My friend… She was involved, and I think something happened to her. Could you please ask Uncle to help me find out where she is?”

Quincy raised an eyebrow and turned to look at the back seat.

That night, Elara waited until deep into the night before the distant sounds of commotion drifted from the guest wing.

She guessed Brian must have returned.

Sure enough, a short while later, Yves Caldwell appeared at her door.

In the study, Brian sat with his arm in a sling, taking his medication.

Elara approached, her gaze lingering on his bandaged arm for a moment before she asked, “When will I be allowed to take Mrs. Archer away?”

Brian paused mid-sip, then set his glass slowly on the desk.

“Aren’t you going to ask how I’m doing?”

Elara looked away. “You’re alive, aren’t you?”

Brian looked down at the blood seeping through his bandages. “If I didn’t care about you, do you think I’d let you test my limits over and over? At the toll station today, I could’ve just taken Mrs. Archer and left you behind…”

“Oh?” Elara’s voice dripped with sarcasm. “So I should get down on my knees and thank you for your mercy, Mr. Vincent?”

A suffocating silence stretched between them, thick as smoke after battle.

Suddenly, Yves Caldwell knocked urgently at the door.

“Mr. Vincent, someone from the Lawrence family is here.”

Both Brian and Elara frowned.

Yves lowered his voice. “It’s the one who’s always based in the capital. I didn’t dare keep him waiting at the gate, so I brought him into the courtyard.”

Elara’s eyes widened—Zane was here.

“Mrs. Archer is no longer here,” Brian said, reading her thoughts. With that, he strode out, leaving a gust of cold air in his wake.
