To Love a Shadow, To Be the Sun novel Chapter 235

Lina’s face went completely pale, her whole body trembling with fear. She rushed to explain, “I swear, I never meant anything like that. I just... I just thought we needed to tie up loose ends to avoid trouble down the road. Isn’t that all for our goal?”

Ellis watched her for a long, tense moment. The fire in his eyes cooled a little, but his gaze remained cold and sharp.

“And here I thought my biggest problem was you.”

Sweat beaded down Lina’s back. “If I could marry Brian, I’d take him far away. How could I ever become a problem for you?”

Ellis let out a cold laugh. “You want to use me to get your man, then you’d better play nice. First time, now this time—you keep using my people to satisfy your own desires. I’m keeping score, Lina. And if I ever lose what I want most…”

He took a step closer, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.

“…I’ll take you down with me.”

Lina shivered, but at the same time, she secretly breathed a sigh of relief.

She’d survived this round. But what about Ingrid—how would she get past her?

Dawn crept in softly.

Elara slept soundly through the second half of the night. Even though her internal clock nagged at her to wake, she refused to open her eyes.

There was just something comforting about falling asleep with her head resting against something solid. It always gave her a strange sense of safety.

Half-awake, she nuzzled against the pleasantly firm “pillow,” even reaching out to grab at it absentmindedly.

The sensation under her palm jolted her.

Wait… why did this feel like a rock-hard dinner roll?

Instantly on high alert, she snapped her eyes open, and the scene before her wiped away any lingering sleep.

Oh God—she was lying in a man’s arms!

Her eyes darted upward in panic, and when she saw his face, her breath hitched.

“Did I… cheat on you again?”

Zane hadn’t slept well, and when her voice woke him, his brows were still furrowed. He looked at her with a cool, detached gaze.

“You had a fever. Passed out on me. Kept me up all night.”

So nothing had happened. Relief washed over Elara.

Brian’s cheating was his own filth, but she had her own boundaries—she refused to stoop that low.

Just then, Quincy Shelton knocked on the bedroom door.

Elara opened it, and Quincy froze for a second when he saw her, quickly averting his gaze.

Only then did Elara realize she was wearing nothing but a man’s dress shirt, bare-legged beneath.

She ducked behind the door, mortified.

Quincy still wouldn’t look at her. He handed over a paper bag, keeping his face turned away.

“Mr. Lawrence sent your size. One of the ladies picked these out. See if they fit.”

Her clothes from yesterday were soaked through—there was no way she could wear them again.

Elara took the bag, mumbling her thanks.

“If you need anything else, just call the boss,” Quincy muttered, then bolted down the hall faster than a rabbit.

Elara showered in the guest bathroom and changed into the clothes Quincy brought—inside and out, everything fit perfectly.

When she emerged, Zane was already at the dining table, idly toying with his breakfast.
