To Love a Shadow, To Be the Sun novel Chapter 241

“Say that again?”

Elara could hardly believe her ears.

A phone was thrust toward her.

Rose wiped away her tears, her voice suddenly steely. "Go ahead, talk. I’m recording. A grown man who can’t keep his word isn’t any better than a limp noodle."

Yves Caldwell’s eyelid twitched, but Brian’s expression didn’t change. He just fixed his gaze on Elara.

"There’s one condition," Brian said quietly. "We need a one-month cooling-off period. During that time, we act like a normal married couple."

Elara let out a short, disbelieving laugh. "You actually think that’s possible?"

Brian closed his eyes for a moment. "I won’t ask you to move back in. I just mean that, whenever I need you to appear as my wife, you cooperate."

Rose yanked Elara behind her and stepped forward herself. "Now you remember she’s your wife? Where were you when your mistresses were making her life hell? Was she just your punching bag? Or maybe your personal punching dummy?"

"And after everything you put her through, you still want to set all these conditions for a divorce? What are you, a pig’s tail? Why can’t you just let things go?"

Brian’s patience finally wore thin. "Yves Caldwell," he called out.

"Go see if there are any open cemetery plots."

Rose instantly fell silent, took a deep breath, and ducked back behind Elara.

Brian turned to Elara, speaking quietly. "Things are tough for me at the office right now, so I don’t want the news about our impending divorce to go public just yet. Let’s keep things normal for this one-month cooling-off period. I promise I won’t ignore your feelings like I did before."

Behind her, Rose tugged gently at Elara’s sleeve, silently begging her not to agree.

But after a moment’s thought, Elara lifted her chin. "Fine. But we go sign the divorce papers right now. At the courthouse."

Brian’s already pale face went even whiter.

"I brought the marriage certificate. Shall we go together?" he asked.

"I drove myself," Elara replied.

Brian nodded, defeated.

Despite everyone’s worries, the whole process at the courthouse went surprisingly smoothly.

Holding the stamped receipt in her hand, Elara felt a rush of emotion.

In thirty days, she’d finally be free.

All she had to do now was make sure Brian didn’t back out during the waiting period.

But as she walked out of the courthouse, she realized Jason and his car were nowhere to be seen.

She scanned the parking lot. Only a single Jaguar was parked there, its hood buried beneath a cloud of blue roses. At first glance, it looked almost like a wedding car.

Elara hesitated, not quite ready to believe it was for her, and started to head out on foot—until the car honked.

Jason leaned out the window, grinning from ear to ear. "Need a ride?"

Elara stared at him for a long moment before she found her voice. "What on earth did you do to your car?"
