After finishing her piece, she strode out with the kind of confidence that made The Goldsmith Family proud.
Elara, wearing a faint smile, raised her champagne glass to Brian. “Sorry about that, VP Vincent. The way you indulge her, I almost thought you two were a real couple.”
With that, she turned and walked away.
Across the room, every seasoned CEO wore the same sneering expression.
In the distance, Summer withdrew her gaze, a small smile playing at her lips.
She turned to the company president they were signing with and said, “Our staff can be a little naïve—far too easy to fool. My apologies.”
The president, a woman in her thirties, nodded in understanding. She explained she had another engagement to attend, but would leave her executive VP and other senior staff to enjoy the rest of the gala.
Jason strolled over, his tone laced with meaning. “That woman walked right into your perfect trap the moment she set foot in this ballroom. I have to say, President Calloway, you’re full of surprises.”
Summer replied with a calm smile, “If you could see through it so easily, wouldn’t you be even more impressed by the person who orchestrated the whole thing? Mr. Lawrence, you do have a pair of eyes—maybe try using them.”
Jason didn’t take offense. Instead, he let out a sigh. “Fair enough. You all secretly arranged to marry off your ‘daughter’ to someone else, and yet you still accept my attention with a clear conscience.”
Summer gave a gentle laugh. “Mr. Lawrence, maybe you should reflect on your own abilities before blaming Ignition Dynamics for outplaying you. Or is it just that you can’t stand to lose?”
Jason didn’t retort. He just chuckled, low and deep.
Elara slipped away to the restroom. She’d barely finished drying her hands when she noticed Brian standing behind her.
“What do you want?” she said, spinning around, one hand gripping the edge of the sink.
Brian let out a cold laugh. “I thought nothing scared you anymore.”
Brian’s patience finally snapped. He stepped forward, trapping Elara between himself and the sink.
“Elara, I swear to God, I never touched Lina. As for Ingrid, I only dated her because…”
A complicated bitterness flickered across his face.
“…One day, you’ll understand why I did what I did.”
But Elara just stared at him. “You hurt me for Lina, over and over. Isn’t that the truth? Every scar on my body—didn’t you put it there? None of that pain touched you, so how can you expect me to forgive you just because you claim you had good reasons?”
Brian was left speechless, a thousand needles of pain stabbing at his heart, sharper each time.
It took him a long moment to steady himself and finally ask, his voice strained, “Then tell me—what do I have to do to make you let this go?”
