To Love a Shadow, To Be the Sun novel Chapter 27

Brian's handsome features were darkened by stormy anger.

Elara had intended to explain what really happened during that phone call, but seeing how convinced he was that she'd done something to Lina, she realized any explanation would be pointless.

So the words she'd meant to say turned into a dry, mocking laugh.

"So what now? She nearly dies, and you act like the sky is falling. But when I get a critical condition notice, you couldn't care less—because I was always supposed to sacrifice myself for her, right?"

"You're standing here just fine, so don't twist things around! She's clinically depressed, Elara. After being thrown out of the hospital, no one could find her. If something actually happens to her, could you really live with yourself?"

Elara's voice was icy. "Whether your sister lives or dies has nothing to do with me. I'll sleep just fine."

Brian's expression grew even darker.

"No matter what you do, I'm not divorcing you. You'd better remember—your grandfather's imported medication cannot be interrupted. Not even for a day."

Her grandfather was her one weakness.

Elara swept her arm across the vanity, sending everything crashing to the floor.

"If you want to play dirty, I'll play dirtier. Tomorrow's headlines will be all about the CEO's stepsister getting an abortion overseas. As for who the father is…"

She gave a cold, sharp smile.

"…let's see what breaks first: my grandfather's medicine supply, or you and your precious sister's reputations."

It had been a long time since anyone dared threaten Brian.

After a few seconds of dead silence, the fury in his eyes faded into something more chilling.

"I must've spoiled you too much; you've forgotten your place."

He tightened his robe with deliberate calm, then walked to the bedroom door and jerked his chin toward the hallway.

Two bodyguards stepped forward.

"Mrs. Vincent needs some time alone to reflect. Take her to the basement until we find the missing person."

Elara's pupils contracted sharply, her fingertips digging into the edge of the table.

She'd seen Brian's ruthlessness toward others; now, at last, he was turning those methods on her for the sake of another woman.

All the tenderness she'd drowned in for the last four years had turned to knives, carving into her heart until she could only laugh at the pain.

Yves Caldwell pushed open the door.

"There's still no news from Aalborg about Miss Vincent. She was thrown out of the hospital just a few minutes after calling you, but there aren't many security cameras in the area—no one saw where she went. Customs has no record of her leaving the country, either."

A look of worry crossed Yves's face.

"Do you think it's possible Mrs. Vincent sent someone to hurt her?"

Brian set his coffee down.

"She'd never do that."

Yves hurried to correct himself. "Right. Besides, we haven't caught those people yet."

Brian shot him a look. "Your job is to make sure they find the missing person."

"Of course, sir."

Truth was, it would be easy enough to find out who those people were. All they had to do was interrogate Mrs. Vincent.
