Summer arched an eyebrow. “My family’s just ordinary. So, why don’t you marry my brother?”
Elara blinked. “What?”
Summer gave her a sly grin. “Honestly, I did think about setting you up with him back in the day. You know how he used to torment me when we were kids. Planting you in ‘enemy territory’ would’ve been like having a secret weapon on my side! Too bad you were always hanging around Ryan Linden back then, and then—poof—you went and married Brian. What a waste!”
She fluttered her lashes, tone suddenly playful. “But hey, if you ever change your mind, I’m still happy to play matchmaker for you two~~”
Elara stood up, poked Summer’s forehead, and laughed. “Keep dreaming, will you? Your schemes are practically hitting me in the face.”
…
The press conference was scheduled for two-thirty in the afternoon.
Elara planned to arrive just on time, but around noon, she got a text from Jason.
He asked her to stop by Blackstar Technologies, without giving any details.
Remembering how he’d helped her last time, Elara left a message for Summer and skipped lunch to head over.
This time, after she gave her name at the reception desk, the staff greeted her warmly and escorted her straight up to the seventeenth floor, right to Zane Lawrence’s office. They left her there.
Unsure if she should let herself in, Elara tried calling Jason, but his line was busy.
She hesitated, then gently pushed the door open.
The spacious office was eerily silent—almost stifling.
She glanced around. No one was there.
Just as she was about to leave, she heard a woman’s voice.
Elara instinctively stepped further inside, her attention drawn to a half-open, hidden door in the wall beside the desk.
It looked like a private lounge.
Inside, Jason was lying facedown on a white bed, shirtless.
Some men just couldn’t stay away from temptation for long.
Back in the lounge, the secretary’s voice continued, low and coaxing.
“Vice President Lawrence is just an illegitimate son. His education and experience can’t compare—”
She leaned closer, her tone honeyed as she pressed herself against Jason.
Jason abruptly raised his hand, stopping her cold.
“That’s enough,” he said quietly, his voice edged with ice. “Whatever you think of my brother, it’s not your place to say. If you’re going to be my secretary, learn your boundaries.”
“I’m sorry, Mr. Lawrence.”
Jason pushed her aside and sat up.
The moment he looked up, he caught sight of Elara standing in the doorway.
