To Love a Shadow, To Be the Sun novel Chapter 304

Summer muttered a few curses under her breath, just as a police officer approached.

“Our preliminary investigation shows this man has a history of psychiatric treatment,” the officer said. “If you want to press charges and pursue legal action, I’m afraid it’ll be complicated.”

Elara, wincing through her pain, spoke softly. “I’m not pressing charges. But please, talk to him—make sure he doesn’t do anything drastic again.”

The officer nodded. “Understood. We’ll keep a record of his behavior.”

Elara’s stomach was hurting so badly she couldn’t keep talking. Summer quickly bundled her back to the hospital.

So, just two hours after being discharged, Elara found herself back in a hospital bed.

Ryan rushed to the hospital after his meeting, only to find Elara had already finished a round of tests. Summer was sitting by the bed, scolding her.

“Babe, is this a year-long streak of terrible luck or what? If you’re not getting set up, you’re getting kidnapped. Seriously—should I just get you a full suit of armor, or maybe take out a multimillion-dollar accident insurance policy with me as the beneficiary? Looking after you, the disaster magnet, is a full-time job!”

Despite the pain in her stomach, Elara wanted to laugh at Summer’s dramatic complaints but couldn’t.

Ryan stepped in. “Honestly, no insurance company would want her. Anyone else with her luck would be cashing in on payouts left and right, but she somehow manages to turn every disaster movie into an inspirational story. So she’s actually a good luck charm—just, you know, in reverse.”

Summer shot Ryan a look full of mock disdain. “Well, well, look who’s finally learned how to defend his girl.”

Ryan’s ears instantly turned red. He ignored her.

But Elara looked at him seriously. “Speaking of being set up… I can’t shake the feeling that things with Chuck aren’t over. Can you look into it for me? Figure out who’s been egging him on, and we’ll know what’s really going on.”

“Sure, I’ll get right on it,” Ryan said.

That reminded Summer of something else. “By the way, Jason Lawrence came by Ignition Dynamics to talk about his smart home battery project, but let’s be honest, he was just looking for an excuse to see you. Nobody at the office knows you’re in the hospital, but he’ll find out soon enough. If you’re not interested, you need to tell him straight—otherwise, he’ll never give up.”

Elara pressed her lips together, saying nothing. One after another, people wanted to use her as a shield.

“Ms. Elara, last night Chuck was found dead in his apartment. Because there was recent conflict between you two, we’re required to search your residence.”

Elara stiffened, her brow furrowing. “Yes, I had issues with him—but so did plenty of other people. Why are you only searching my place?”

“This is just procedure. We’re checking everyone involved. We hope you’ll cooperate.”

In other words, she was their prime suspect.

With no choice, Elara let them inside.

“What’s going on?” Ryan arrived with a thermos in hand, only to be stopped at the door.

A police officer briefly explained and told him he couldn’t enter.

Ryan’s frustration was obvious. “She was home alone all night—who’s going to vouch for her alibi? Are you just going to assume every single woman lives in a vacuum?”
