To Love a Shadow, To Be the Sun novel Chapter 306

It was obvious now: everyone Elara had contact with had already been bought off.

She closed her eyes, trying to think of a way out.

Meanwhile, outside, Summer was nearly frantic with worry.

She’d called almost every lawyer in the city, but no one was willing to take Elara’s case.

With nowhere left to turn, she had to try one last desperate move—she pushed Ryan forward.

Normally, a lawyer could at least visit their client.

But the detention center kept stalling with one excuse after another, refusing to let Ryan see Elara, let alone talk about bail.

It was clear as day: someone was pulling strings behind the scenes.

And with this much influence, there was only one person who could be behind it—Ellis’s mysterious backer.

Summer didn’t care about the risks anymore. She decided to find Brian.

But Ryan stopped her. “Do you want Elara to get her divorce or not?”

Summer snapped, “What’s the point of a divorce if she’s going to prison?”

Ryan nodded. “If Elara had to choose between the two, you know she’d rather be free, even if it meant staying married.”

Summer was stunned into silence.

Ryan headed back to the office.

Jason had just finished a meeting and was surprised to see Ryan waiting in his office.

“The Helios project is at a critical stage—what brings the great Vice President Lawrence to my humble corner?”

Ryan ignored the sarcasm and got straight to the point. “Hey, do you know when Uncle Adam is coming back?”

Ever since the day Ryan’s identity had been officially acknowledged by the Lawrence family, their relationship had been tense. They only pretended to be “brothers” in front of the elders.

The rest of the time, even using each other’s full names was too much. They simply called each other “you,” as if any more familiarity was a waste.

Jason stared at him. “Who are you trying to see?”

Ryan hesitated a moment. “Elara.”

Meanwhile, Mrs. Lawrence was having coffee with Lina.

Mrs. Lawrence was a woman who cared deeply about appearances and never lowered herself to deal with women like Lina.

But after Lina’s repeated pleading—saying it was about her son—she finally agreed to meet, though she refused to sit at the same table as Lina. She rented out the entire café, and the two women sat at separate tables.

Lina felt humiliated but forced a smile; she was determined to cut off every avenue of escape for Elara.

She started awkwardly, “You may have heard the rumors about my brother and his wife. She—”

Mrs. Lawrence cut her off with a raised hand. “Get to the point. I don’t have much time.”

Lina bit her lip. “My brother’s wife is promiscuous, always chasing after men. This time, she was caught red-handed—murder, prison—there’s no way she’s getting out. The Vincent family won’t help her. I’m just afraid she’ll try to get some man from your Lawrence family to intervene.”
