To Love a Shadow, To Be the Sun novel Chapter 336

Zane quickly pulled Elara behind him. The intruder stood atop the bed, shouting something guttural in a foreign tongue before lunging straight at them.

“Careful! He said anyone in his way dies!” Elara cried out.

But Zane moved with lethal efficiency—three swift motions and the attacker’s neck snapped. “He doesn’t get to decide who lives or dies in front of me,” he said coldly.

No sooner had the words left his mouth than the wooden door burst open with a bang. Renata tumbled in, breathless.

“Kick me, will you? I’ll personally send you to hell, even if the devil won’t take you!” she spat, then spun and charged back into the main room.

Only then did Elara realize the chaos raging outside.

Rain battered the night. Neely’s accomplices had come to break him out, but the guards spotted them in time. Now, a desperate fight was underway.

Somehow, Neely had already slipped his restraints. Blades flashed, fists flew, grunts and the crunch of splintering wood mixed with the thunderstorm. In seconds, the cramped clay house became a warzone.

“Take care of yourself,” Zane said, then vaulted into the fray, squaring off with Neely, who had already tossed two guards aside.

In the confusion, a thug tried to bring a knife down on the back of Zane’s head.

Panic surged through Elara. She snatched up a thin wooden rod from beside her and swung it hard.

Crack!

Something didn’t feel right.

She opened her eyes to find Renata pinning the would-be assassin, while Zane clutched his arm, jaw clenched, staring at her with a look she couldn’t quite read.

She’d smacked Zane instead.

“Sorry!” Elara stammered, mortified. “I was aiming for him—why’d you get in the way?”

Who was causing trouble for whom, really?

Zane could only stare, speechless.

Well, he thought, this is the woman I chose. I’ll just have to live with it.

That split-second hesitation was all Neely needed. He knocked Renata aside and lunged for Zane.

This time, Elara saw it coming. As Zane grappled with Neely, she aimed carefully and jammed the wooden rod straight into Neely’s eye.

Neely howled in agony. Zane instantly locked an arm around his throat—but Neely, desperate, fumbled something from his pocket: a tiny bomb.
