She couldn’t hold back and interrupted Fiona.
“Mrs. Lawrence, Elara is our company’s chief technology officer. She’s in the middle of a critical project—if you keep her here all day, who’s going to handle her work?”
Fiona replied coolly, “The Lawrence family won’t let her go unrewarded.”
Summer laughed. “One deal from her brings us hundreds of millions. How much can the Lawrence family possibly offer her?”
Fiona choked on her words, her gaze turning contemptuous when she noticed the flowers in Summer’s hand.
Ever since Jason was admitted, the stream of visitors had been nonstop. Outwardly, they came to show concern, but everyone knew they were just trying to curry favor with the Lawrences. With the Vincents out of the picture, everyone was eager to cozy up to the new power in town.
Fiona scoffed. “You’re here to visit Jason too, aren’t you?”
“No,” Summer replied earnestly, not a trace of humor in her voice. “These carnations are for my mother. If I were visiting Mr. Lawrence, I’d have brought white daisies.”
Fiona’s face flushed with anger. “You—”
Summer arched a brow, cutting her off before she could explode. “Elara is loyal, that’s the only reason she lets you keep her on a leash. But if you think you can keep lording it over her just because of your son, I won’t hesitate to make sure Jason gets a few more shocks to his system.”
She lowered her voice for the last part, mindful of the patient’s fragile state.
Fiona was left speechless.
Elara hid a smile and said, “Mrs. Lawrence, I have something to take care of, so I’ll leave it here for today.”
With that, she and Summer headed for the door.
“Elara…” Jason called after her, reluctant to see her go.
