“Zacharias teamed up with another woman to trick you and stab you in the back? That explains it.”
Rory’s sharp expression finally softened.
Anneliese let out a slow breath, relieved she had prepared for this.
“Mr. Reyes, you and Annie both suffered because of that fraud Zacharias. Don’t you want payback for what he did? What kind of evidence are you holding onto? You can trust us with it.”
Jessica saw Rory’s attitude loosening and pressed while she had the chance.
Rory frowned, still torn.
Anneliese could see his hesitation. Fighting through the dizziness and nausea that kept weighing her down, she spoke.
“Mr. Reyes, I know Zacharias has money and influence, and you’re afraid he’ll retaliate. But if you give me what you know–or any evidence you still have–you can leave the country right away.
“Or just name your price. I’ll buy it off you. Once it’s in my hands, it won’t be your problem anymore.”
Rory finally caved. His fist tightened, and his voice came out hard.
“Five million. I want five million.”
It was a steep price. Jessica thought he sounded exactly like the businessman he
used to be.
He was bold enough to throw out a number like that without hesitation.
But Anneliese nodded. “Fine.”
Rory’s eyes widened. “Mrs. Shaw, you didn’t even ask what kind of evidence I’ve

Anneliese pressed a hand to her temple. “Zacharias did you dirty, Mr. Reyes. The money I have comes from Clauderias Tech anyway, so I might as well use it to make things right.”
“Generous, Mrs. Shaw. Still, if you really manage to get divorced, you’ll probably walk away with hundreds of millions. Spending five million is worth it.”
Jessica cut in. “Then tell us, Mr. Reyes. What exactly do you have?”
“It’s a recording my assistant Hector made. He admitted that Zacharias paid him years ago to spy on me. The day I left home, Hu called Zacharias right after, and I was hit with a car accident at the next intersection.”
Jessica frowned.
“But that alone doesn’t prove Zacharias caused the crash. He could argue he paid your assistant just to get ahead of your company in financing.”
It wasn’t strong evidence.
Jessica felt let down.
She had hoped Rory held something big enough to throw Zacharias in prison and leave Clauderias Tech in Anne’s hands.
Rory gave a bitter laugh. “Miss, if I really had hard proof, do you think I’d let Zacharias get away with it? I would’ve buried him long ago.”
Jessica stayed quiet.
Fair enough–she had expected too much.
But Anneliese wasn’t discouraged. She didn’t need evidence to jail Zacharias. She only needed enough to push him toward divorce, and this recording carried weight.
“The recording. Money for goods.” She held out her hand.

Rory shook his head. “The flash drive’s at my old family house. You’ll have to come with me.”
Anneliese glanced at Jessica, who gave a small nod.
Rory’s cousin wheeled him outside, and the two women followed. Jessica leaned closer and whispered.
“I think he’s asking way too much. That recording’s not worth it.”
Anneliese looked at Rory, frail and hunched in his chair.
“Let it go. He’s been through hell.”
All she thought about was getting that recording. Once she was back in Oceaton, she could finally divorce Zacharias and free herself from this rotten marriage. That alone made it worth the cost.
Rory’s old family house sat in a rural village under Riveraton, hidden among the mountains.
By the time they arrived, night had fallen.
