“Anyway, you’ll understand when you meet him tomorrow. You’ve really misunderstood me. What you treasure so much, I might not even care for. Anne, you’ve been back in the White family for years now–you need to broaden your horizons.”
Though she sounded as if she were explaining helplessly, every word dripped with boast and scorn, her disdain for Anneliese striking as clearly as a slap across the face.
Expression calm, Anneliese gestured for Jonathan and Zion to make themselves at home and walked onto the balcony. “Are you finished? Because I recorded everything. Want me to play it for Zacharias? Or better yet–does that man you like know you’re using him as a trophy? Should I let him hear it tomorrow too?”
Silence fell on the other end of the line. When Selina finally spoke again, her voice was taut. “Anne, you’ve misunderstood me. I only wanted to make it clear I have no interest in Zacharias. Whatever he did to hurt you, that was one–sided on his part. As your sister, I’ve always wished you and your husband a long and happy marriage.”
Anneliese let out a sharp laugh. “Selina, you think too highly of yourself. Zacharias told me everything. You begged him, swore you’d go to prison young if he didn’t help. Out of pity, he went along with your little scheme to deceive me. Stop flaunting your superiority in front of me–it’s meaningless.
“Oh, and he also said the only one he’s ever loved is me. If you and I fell into the water together right now, I’d bet everything he would save me first. He hasn’t contacted you, has he? That’s because you annoy him. Stop dreaming about being everyone’s darling–it’s ridiculous.” She covered her mouth and laughed softly.
Selina’s breathing grew heavy. Anneliese could picture her face twisting in rage, skin darkening as if the words had cut deep. It was true–no one knew one better than one’s enemies.
Selina had always perched above her, and she would never stand being provoked like this. Anneliese almost looked forward to the next day, curious to see how Selina would act then.
After a long pause, Selina’s voice came back, gritted between teeth. “That’s fine then, Anne. I’m glad I didn’t cause any misunderstanding between you and your husband.”
Anneliese snorted. “Pfft. Don’t tell me you actually believed I was recording you. I’m not that bored.”
Her mocking laugh shattered Selina’s composure. Selina hung up in a fury, then swept her cosmetics off the vanity with one hand, her eyes dark and venomous. Anneliese, just you wait.

When Anneliese stepped back inside from the balcony, Jonathan asked. He gestured at the two gowns lying on the couch.
“The White family is hosting tomorrow.”
Not wanting to say more, Anneliese quickly shifted the subject. “Thanks for bringing breakfast. Have you eaten yet? Want to join me?”
Zion had already placed the takeaway on the dining table. Jonathan, however, had pressing work and no intention of sitting down. “I already ate. I need to head to a meeting.”
