Jonathan was going to say something, but Zion turned in his seat, twisting around with a look of exasperation.
“Mrs. Fullbuster, you don’t get it. When Mr. Fullbuster dives into work, he vanishes from the world. He doesn’t eat, he doesn’t sleep, and nothing we say ever gets through to him. If you want him to take care of himself, then you’ll have to call, text, and push him yourself. It’s the only thing that works.”
Jonathan waited for Zion to finish, then cut him a sharp glance.
Zion instantly raised a finger to his lips and went quiet. Jonathan’s eyes slid back to Anneliese.
She offered him a faint smile. “If it doesn’t interfere with your work, then I—”
“You can interrupt me anytime, my dear wife.” His smile was gentle, but the weight it carried was undeniable.
For so long, she had believed that Zacharias‘ eyes were the picture of charm, sly and seductive.
Now she realized how wrong she had been. Jonathan’s cool eyes, when they curved into the smallest smile, carried a power that shook her heart in ways Zacharias never could.
She nearly pressed her hand to her chest just to steady herself. She reminded herself this was only for show, only to keep up the act in front of Zion. That thought alone managed to calm her pulse.
“Okay…” She nodded without thinking, pushed the door open, and stepped out of the car.
When Anneliese returned home, she found Jessica on the rug in the living room, brushing through Meatloaf’s thick coat.
The sound of the door opening made the dog’s ears twitch. Meatloaf bounded forward, tail whipping from side to side.
Anneliese bent to rub his head, while Jessica stood up in a rush,
“Where did you go? You said you’d tell me when you got back.”
Jessica’s gut twisted. Something felt off. She grabbed a glass of water, pressed it into Anneliese’s hand, and took her coat.
“I went to City Hall.”

“City Hall? You already got your divorce papers. Why would you go back to the complex again?”
Jessica froze the second the words left her lips. The coat slipped from her fingers and hit the
floor.
Her eyes went wide.
The complex where City Hall was in meant only two things: divorce or marriage. The courthouse for the first, and City Hall for the latter.
Anneliese’s cheeks flushed as Jessica’s stare dug straight into her.
“It’s exactly what you think. I went to get a marriage license.”
Jessica gawked like she’d been struck. She spun in a tight circle, stunned, then grabbed Anneliese’s shoulders with shaking hands. “With Mr. Fullbuster?”
Her mind scrambled for another possibility, panic creeping into her tone. If it wasn’t with Jonathan, then it could only be with…
“Don’t tell me you went back and remarried that b*stard Zacharias?”
Anneliese’s eyes flared. “Hey, that’s a criminal offense! It was Jonathan. Jonathan!”
Jessica lost her breath. She sucked in air in ragged gulps, then when the truth sank in—that Anneliese had become Mrs. Fullbuster, the future mistress of the Fullbuster Family–her lungs betrayed her again. She gasped so hard she wheezed, fighting for air.
“This isn’t real. I’m not dreaming.”
She smacked her forehead several times, each slap stinging.
It hurt.
So, it was real.
She thought of every time Anneliese had sworn her heart was untouched. And now, out of nowhere, she was holding a marriage license. Jessica’s mind raced. It had to be desperation, maybe a way to cling to Jonathan for safety, maybe a shield for her hopeless best friend.
Tears filled her eyes. She dropped to her knees at Anneliese’s side, clutched her leg, and
sobbed.
“God, this means I’m on Mr. Fullbuster’s ship now, just a grunt under his command. How do I
