The tender green petals framed the curve of her car, their brightness making her small lobe shine with a deep red glow, and her beauty outshone the blossoms themselves.
Jonathan pressed save on the picture, and the corner of his mouth rose in the smallest smile.
He turned off his phone and shifted his gaze toward Zion, who stood nearby.
“How’s the progress in the lab? Everything’s running well?”
Zion nodded with calm certainty. “Rest easy, Mr. Fullbuster. Everything is going without a hitch. When you return, Mrs. Fullbuster will be caught off guard in the best way.”
Jonathan instructed Joel to take care of Marcus‘ situation.
Joel soon arrived to pick up Anneliese and Jessica, bringing Zane along with him.
Inside the car, Anneliese quietly offered her thanks.
Joel, both hands on the wheel, broke into a grin. “Don’t be so formal. We’re all Jonathan’s friends, and since you’re married to him, you’re family too. Isn’t that right, Zane?”
He gave Zane’s arm on the passenger seat a firm slap. Zane twisted in his seat to glance back at Anneliese and Jessica.
“Jonathan never showed the slightest interest in women, so we all thought he’d end up single forever. And now he’s the first one of us to settle down. It’s insane. He’s managed to lock down both love and a career. Anneliese, since your wedding came out of nowhere, you’d better take a real close look at him now.”
Only a few hours earlier, Jonathan had tossed their group chat a photo of his marriage license, acting like it was some kind of joke, saying he wanted the single guys to at least know what one looked like. Zane still bristled over it.
He was the oldest of the four, had dated the most, and had always been considered the one most likely to marry first.
And Jonathan swooped in and stole that from him.
Jessica’s eyes flickered with curiosity as she leaned closer to Anneliese, her smile sharp with
intent.

“Take a closer look? He avoids women, and he keeps himself clean, so that already proves enough. Or are you telling me he’s got some leftover feelings from the past?”
Zane arched a brow and gave her a look. “You’re really trying to pry the truth from a lawyer without even softening the words?”
Jessica scoffed and rolled her eyes. “Pry? I’m being straight with it. If Mr. Fullbuster really had some woman buried deep in his heart, no matter how I asked, he wouldn’t spill a single word
of it.”
Men who wanted to hide something always had friends who covered for them.
Like Zacharias, who hid his own feelings so deep that no one could guess he still clung to someone until it came out years later.
Jackson let out a laugh and lifted a thumb in Jessica’s direction. “You’re sharper than most people out there. But I’ll tell you this. Jonathan has never had an ex–girlfriend. He’s been single since birth, and with Anneliese, it’s his first love. But…”
“But what? Don’t drag it out, just say it.”
Jackson stretched the words with a drawn–out tone, enjoying the suspense.
Anneliese hadn’t taken much from their talk before, because neither Joel nor Jackson knew her marriage with Jonathan was only an arrangement.
She knew better than to dig into his private history herself.
But Jessica kept pressing, and Anneliese tugged on the back of her clothes, but Jackson’s pause made her chest tighten with unease.
Jonathan really might have someone untouchable in his past.
Jessica urged him on, and Anneliese’s eyes fell on him too. Jackson curled his lips into a wicked grin and chuckled.
“I don’t know if it counts as a first love, but when Jonathan was a kid, he did know a little girl. He even kept a picture of her on his phone…”
Joel cut a sharp look at Jackson from the driver’s seat, his stare heavy with warning.
He thought Jackson had completely lost it. Even he, the most talkative of the bunch, would never run his mouth about Jonathan’s private life in front of his brand–new wife.
If Jackson wanted to dig a hole for himself, he was free to do it, but Joel refused to be dragged
