Anneliese shut her eyes tight, holding her breath, biting her lip, terrified that her wildly beating heart would burst right out of her chest.
The man lay perfectly still. Is he… not awake?
She exhaled a shaky sigh and tried to shift away, pressing with her knees, but suddenly, a large hand landed on her lower back.
“Ah!”
She cried out, and before she could move, she toppled squarely onto Jonathan, who caught her in a firm embrace.
Instinctively, she wrapped her arms around him, letting her long hair spill over her shoulders, her cheek pressing into the side of his neck.
Her face heated, and she murmured in a tiny, flustered voice, “I… I just wanted to help cover you with a blanket…”
She pushed gently against his shoulders, trying to free herself.
But Jonathan didn’t let go. He held her as if he weren’t fully awake, silent and unmoving.
Just as Anneliese began to wonder if he was still asleep, his handsome face nuzzled into her chest, brushing lightly–and then, shockingly, he inhaled deeply, like a cat sniffing something irresistible.
Anneliese froze.
He couldn’t possibly be treating her like a pillow, could he?
But his breath was so hot, it felt like it cut right through her thin nightshirt, brushing her sensitive skin and sending shivers of tingling warmth through her.
She stiffened, not daring to move, hoping he’d release her.
Yet she could feel it–kneeling at the edge of the sofa, her knees perfectly wedged in the most awkward spot–she seemed to have awakened some sleeping giant.
It was becoming more and more obvious.
Ugh–how did all this even happen?

Panic flared in her chest. This situation had gone way beyond her control, and she had no idea how to fix it.
Jonathan noticed that she was a little startled. Just when he was about to loosen his hold, the pounding on the door suddenly cut through the quiet of their racing hearts.
Anneliese flinched, her body shivering slightly in his arms.
Jonathan instinctively tightened his hold, then lifted his head from her chest, patting her back gently in a rough, husky voice.
“Did that scare you?”
Anneliese wasn’t sure whether he meant the knocking or something else. Her face flushed red, and she shoved him away.
“I’ll go see.”
She hurried to her feet and dashed toward the door.
