“Every year I confess to you, and every year you turn me down, claiming you like someone else!
“And now look at you–suddenly getting married just like that? Tell me, Jonathan, were you so lazy you couldn’t even invent a proper excuse? Did you just say whatever came to mind to brush me off?”
Anneliese froze mid–step.
“It’s true,” Jonathan answered evenly. “I wasn’t brushing you off. I respect you too much for that.”
His calm, almost indifferent tone only infuriated India further.
“Oh, I should feel so honored,” she scoffed. “Respect for your admirers–how moving. But if you’ve been pining for someone all these years, why involve an innocent girl in your mess?”
Her words turned cold, like ice seeping into the room. His lips curved in the faintest smirk, ready to reveal that the woman he had loved all along was the very one he had chosen to marry.
However, India cut him off mercilessly. “What happened to your principles, Jonathan? Isn’t this just because she’s pretty and easy to fool? She was already tricked into marriage once, and you still went after her! You’re no better than the jerk–you’re just another player.”
A player? He almost laughed. Is that supposed to insult me?
India was not like the others. She had chased him relentlessly for years, and their families had been close for generations.
He got along well with her brothers; she was a colleague, a friend. But her constant confessions, her refusal to accept rejection, and the relentless pressure from their families had long worn him down.
So, when she hurled the word “player” at him, Jonathan stayed silent. Explaining himself felt pointless.
India, seeing his silence, let out a furious laugh. She scooped Ellie into her arms, spat one last “jerk” at him, and stormed away.

From the shadows of a marble pillar, Anneliese caught the whole exchange.
She shrank back instinctively, her gaze falling to the floor.
She remembered Zane once mentioning that Jonathan had loved someone for years.

Back then, she had dismissed it as idle gossip, nothing that concerned her. But now, with the truth pressing against her chest, she felt a weight she couldn’t name.
Her heart heavy, she waited until Jonathan left before pulling out her phone.
Moments later, a waiter slipped her a sealed bag. Inside were a few strands of Timothy’s hair.
She had paid the waiter discreetly–better him than risking suspicion by getting close to Timothy herself.
Back in the glittering banquet hall, Jonathan was impossible to miss. He drew attention like a beacon, surrounded by Oceaton’s elite. Anneliese hesitated, wondering if she should approach, when Jonathan’s gaze locked onto hers.
Excusing himself with a few polite words, he walked directly toward her.
She smiled faintly and moved in his direction too–only for another woman to intercept him.
A striking figure in a sapphire dress, wine glass in hand, stepped boldly into his path.
“Mr. Fullbuster,” she said with a radiant smile, “I’m Jenna Lawson. I’ve always wanted to thank Fullbuster Group for choosing me as Halcyon & Co.’s spokesperson, but I never had the chance to meet you. Now that I finally see you here, may I have the honor of toasting you?”
The woman’s smile bloomed like a flower as she lifted her glass toward Jonathan, tilting her face up,
her eyes brimming with unguarded admiration.
Anneliese recognized her instantly–Jenna Lawson, a rising star.
She shot to fame with a breakout role in a hit fantasy drama, landed major endorsements, and became a variety show regular. Though her recent dramas hadn’t been blockbusters, her name was steadily climbing.
Anneliese hesitated, watching.
