He stayed silent, his eyes locked on Anneliese for a moment before he turned away, his gaze dark and unreadable, and walked off.

At last, the commotion outside the operating room gave way to quiet.

“Annie, you doing okay? Your grandma’s tough–she’ll make it through, I know it.” Jessica saw how drained Anneliese looked. She took her cold hands in hers, gently rubbing warmth back into them.

Anneliese forced a shaky smile, trying to hold herself together. “How come you showed up with Mr. Shayman?”

Everything had been so sudden that she hadn’t even managed to call Jessica. Obviously, Jessica had arrived with Zane.

Jessica’s eyes flickered before darting toward Zane. She swiftly offered an explanation, “We happened to meet at a diner right as he got Mr. Fullbuster’s call.”

That wasn’t how it had gone.

Zane’s brows lifted, and a spark of admiration flashed in his eyes. She’s sharp. This alone won’t decide the case, but it could tilt the balance in the defendant’s favor. That IOU, especially, is a strong bargaining chip.

“The IOU is in a box on her nightstand in Baytree,” Anneliese said, “and I know the neighbors

Jessica interrupted, “I’ve got it. I know all those neighbors. I’ll go to Baytree and talk to them.”

“I’ll go with you,” Zane chimed in, turning his gaze to her.

Jessica frowned. Why’s a top lawyer running around on errands like this? Then it hit her. Oh yeah, Jonathan gives him the case–no wonder he’s going all in.

She nodded. “Okay, let’s go.”

Just as they were about to leave, Anneliese remembered something. She called out to Zane. “Melody and Lenora have a housekeeper named Cynthia Patterson. She might know what they did to my grandma. She could be a key witness.”

Zane gave a firm nod before leaving with Jessica.

Anneliese slumped back, exhaustion written all over her face, her eyes locked on the doors to the operating room.

Jonathan wrapped an arm around her shoulders. “It’s alright.”

He eased her into a chair and gave her a bottle of water.

She accepted it, but didn’t take a sip. Jonathan stayed by her side, steady and silent.

His phone buzzed once, twice, then again. He ignored it.

Anneliese stirred. “The surgery could take hours. Don’t worry about me–go handle your work.”

She forced a smile, brittle and thin.
