“Anne, you finally decided to come see me!” Melanie reached out, but Anneliese didn’t move toward her. Instead, she walked over to the couch and sat down without a glance back.

After crossing her legs, she looked at Melanie and said, “A few days apart, you suddenly look ten years older. You’ve got three devoted children spoiling you, yet you look frail here.”

Her words dripped with sarcasm. Melanie felt a headache coming on, but what hurt more was that Anneliese had somehow hit a nerve.

Melanie had been in the hospital for days. Timothy, Christopher, and Perseus said the company was too busy to visit. Last night was the first time any of them came. When they arrived, visiting hours were almost over, and they left after barely ten minutes.

And Selina, the daughter who was usually the most attentive, hadn’t even visited until today.

For some reason, Melanie’s mind wandered back four or five years, to a time when she had been sick. Back then, Anneliese had spent days brewing herbal remedies for herself and preparing light meals every day. When Melanie had headaches, Anneliese had even massaged her acupoints.

Melanie stared at the indifferent face before her, feeling sadness and guilt.

“Anne, she’s not the only one showing signs of age. Haven’t I been feeling it too? The company’s projects are falling apart, our cash flow’s on the brink, and getting the family out of this mess is just one word from Mr. Fullbuster. Sure enough, Anneliese continued. “Selina just warned me that Jonathan only married me to toy with me. He doesn’t care for me, and being Mrs. Fullbuster isn’t something to brag about. I agree. In front of Jonathan, I don’t carry the weight you think I do. I can’t help any of you.”

With that, Anneliese stood up and headed for the door.

“Anne, wait!” Timothy’s expression twisted with fury as he snapped, spinning around and swinging his hand hard across Selina’s face. “What kind of nonsense are you spouting! Go apologize to Anne properly, right now!”

The slap hit like a bolt of lightning, leaving Selina staggering.

Timothy was strong, still in his prime despite his age, and there was no way Anneliese could match his power.

His slap sent Selina crashing to the ground. She let out a sharp scream, her vision darkening, and blood ran from the corner of her mouth.

She lay there, humiliated, clutching her fists, completely unable to believe what had just happened.

I can’t even remember how often my family and Zacharias have been on my side. They’ve always made Anneliese apologize to me again and again. But now, Dad actually expects me to apologize to Anneliese! He even does this in front of her, hitting me like that.

Selin’s mouth was full of that metallic, sweet taste, and for the first time, she felt what it was like for Anneliese to be mistreated.
