Perseus‘ eyes were practically pleading, laced with desperate flattery.

Luke chuckled and shook his head. “You’re a little too cager, Mr. Perseus. Your brother hasn’t even finished his drink yet.”
Perseus turned and saw Christopher swaying unsteadily, barely able to hold himself up. A third of the liquor remained in his bottle.
Christopher forced down another gulp, but his body had reached its limit. He turned to the side, ready to vomit.
“Chris!” Perseus lunged to steady him.
He managed to catch his brother, but the bottle slipped from Christopher’s hand and shattered on the floor. Liquor splashed across the room.
Luke clicked his tongue lazily. “Tsk tsk, spilled the booze. Way to ruin the mood.”
Someone stood up and started shooing the brothers toward the door. It was obvious now–the drinking wasn’t a warm–up for negotiations. It was a humiliation ritual.
Perseus clenched his fists, forcing himself to keep his tone level. “Mr. Doyle, if the price isn’t right, we can still negotiate.”
Luke waved him off. “Price? Please. Everyone knows your family brought this on yourselves. You ignored the real daughter, spoiled the wrong one, and even offended Jonathan. Who’d dare touch your mess now? Lowering the price won’t help. Even if you gave it away, no one would take over that disaster of a company.”
The room burst into laughter and jeering.
“They pampered an adopted daughter who turned out to be illegitimate, and now the real one’s married into the Fullbuster family. The drama in the White family never disappoints.”
“I swear, everyone there must’ve lost their minds. Mr. White let his mistress swap his real daughter, raised the illegitimate daughter like a princess, and let the mistress‘ brother bleed the company dry. That woman really played her cards well.”
“Mrs. White and her two sons weren’t any smarter. The whole family danced to a tune by a mistress and her illegitimate child. If the White family doesn’t go bankrupt, who will?”
Each comment landed like a slap, echoing in their ears. Whether it was the alcohol or sheer

humiliation, their tempers snapped.
“Honestly, the Whites have no one to blame but themselves-”

“Shut up!” Christopher lunged first, grabbing the collar of a man in a loud floral shirt and punching him square in the face.
“Sh*t!”
The man toppled onto the couch, wiped the blood from his mouth, cursed, and kicked Christopher hard in the stomach.
Christopher was far too drunk to fight back. He collapsed, and the man pounced, raining punches down on him.
“Chris! D*mn it, let him go!”
Seeing his brother beaten, Perseus charged in with bloodshot eyes.
The others joined the brawl. Before long, the brothers were curled up on the floor, getting kicked and stomped by the crowd.
Eventually, when neither could even cry out anymore, Luke finally raised a hand.
“That’s enough. Don’t actually kill them.”
The crowd backed off. Luke crushed his cigarette between his fingers, stood from the couch, and strolled over to the battered brothers, looking down at them with disdain.
“Why get so worked up? Everything they said was true. Honestly, the Whites had this coming.”
