Jonathan was uneasy because Anneliese still lived in the dark. He feared words would slip from his mouth that should never be spoken. He feared his actions would betray the secret he carried. That was why he wanted her sent abroad,
Elizabeth thought she could test Anneliese with a simple call. She wanted to know if the girl truly knew nothing. She never imagined the call would be cut off in her face. Worse, the bodyguards stormed in right after.
It was obvious. They knew she had tried to call Anneliese.
She had only just dialed, and they already knew.
That could never be a chance.
It had to be Anneliese. She must have tattled to Jonathan again.
She not only hung up but also ratted her out. Elizabeth’s suspicion grew darker. She now believed Anneliese might know what really happened in that fire years ago. Maybe she had returned to strike back.
A chill crept across her back. She glared at the men and snapped. “What phone? You took my phone the moment I walked in here! Get out of my way!”
The bodyguard’s voice was flat. “Mrs. Fullbuster, please hand over your spare phone. If you refuse, we will search you.”
“I dare you to try!”
Elizabeth’s fury burst loose. She shoved at the man and tried to storm off.
The next second, her arms were twisted behind her. The bodyguard pulled the hidden phone from her pocket. His hands checked her waist and hips to be certain nothing else was there.
Elizabeth had always lived as a wife of a rich man. Her marriage might be cold, but her life had been full of comfort and pride. She had never suffered humiliation like this.
Her face turned a deep shade of purple from rage. Her teeth clenched tight.
Anneliese, she thought. That wretched girl.
At that moment, Anneliese had just left the hospital. She was only at the first traffic light when the butler called.
He said Penelope had nearly fainted. Without hesitation, Anneliese swung her car toward the Fullbuster Residence.
When she arrived, the private doctor had already finished his check. Thankfully, nothing serious had happened. The same doctor said Penelope was too old to handle anger, needed to rest, and remain calm. After the doctor left, Anneliese walked into Penelope’s bedroom.
Penelope lay pale on the bed. Her eyes cut sharp at the butler. “Why call Anne? You had nothing better to do?”
Anneliese hurried forward with a pout. “Grandma, how could you say that? If you don’t feel well, of course, he has to call me. Or do

you only call me your granddaughter–in–law with your lips but not with your heart?”

Penelope laughed at her sass. She reached for her hand and pulled her down to sit at her side. “I know you’re busy. You have your lab, your research, your grandmother at the hospital. I don’t want you worn out.”
Anneliese lifted her chin with pride. “I won’t be worn out. I know how to plan my time. I’m sharp and I get things done fast. Besides, the new year is around the corner. The lab won’t return to full work until after that anyway.”
Her confidence lit her face. Penelope laughed again.
“Happy to hear that. Since you’re not too busy, you and Jojo should go take your wedding photos. And tell me, when are you two planning to hold the wedding?”
Her tone carried urgency. After Elizabeth’s visit earlier, her worry had grown. She had waited years for a granddaughter–in–law. She could not lose her now.
“What?” Anneliese froze in place. She never thought Penelope would mention it. She had never thought about it because her marriage with Jonathan was only a deal.
