He picked up his fork and lowered his head to eat the noodles, like even looking at her once more was annoying.

Anneliese gave him a look full of annoyance.

After dinner, she offered to do the dishes, but Jonathan silently picked up the two bowls and went straight into the kitchen.

Anneliese thought it would be rude to leave with Meatloaf right then, so she stayed in the living room. That was when Selina’s video call came in.

She answered with a blank face. On the screen, Selina wore a pinkpurple gown, her makeup perfect, and a full set of emerald jewelry.

She waved and smiled. Anne, I’m throwing a birthday party today. My parents and brothers are all coming to celebrate. I was trying on my outfit when I suddenly remembered that today’s your birthday back home. Happy birthday! Oh, and can you check my makeup and dress? Tell me what you think.

She held the phone out and turned it around to show herself from all angles.

Her eyes and smile were full of pride and joy, clearly trying to get under Anneliese’s skin.

She wanted Anneliese to get upset, jealous, lose control, or even break down.

But Anneliese stayed calm. She looked at her like she was watching a clown.

Everything matches fine. The emerald’s bright, suits you well. Like frosting that looks sweet but is already turning bad. I can almost smell it through the screen.

Anneliese wrinkled her nose, waved her hand, and frowned.

Oh no, it’s gone off. That fake sweetness really stinks.”

Selina’s smile froze, her face turned cold, and then she gave a sigh.

Anne, my parents and brothers are all here, but they didn’t bring you. Even Zach stayed here. You’re upset about that, aren’t you?

Anneliese let out a cold laugh. Selina continued.

Don’t deny it. Look, your eyes are red.”

Selina covered her mouth and laughed. She wore an emerald bracelet on her wrist and dangled it in front of the camera for a moment.

Anneliese thought it looked familiar, but before she could get a good look, Selina lowered her hand.

Seeing Selina’s smug face, Anneliese rolled her eyes.

Her eyes were red.

From hate.

How could she not hate? Seeing Selina’s fake innocent face brought back memories of that night when she was eighteen.

She remembered being dragged into a dark alley, her mouth covered, only able to make desperate whimpers like a trapped animal.

She remembered how her clothes were ripped, those filthy hands roaming over her

They even pulled out a camera. If she hadn’t fought back, she didn’t know what would have happened.

In the end, she only scared them off because of how badly she was hurt.

She had crawled through the darkness, bleeding, as if the alley would never end.

The scar on her stomach was still deep, and the nightmares came often.

How could she not hate?

But she had no evidence. In the past two days, she had secretly checked the bank records of Zacharias and the White family after her accident four years ago. There hadn’t been any large or unusual transactions.

After four years, with so many people protecting Selina, it was unlikely any proof remained.

Anneliese’s eyes grew redder, her whole body sinking into those memories, when Selina suddenly exclaimed.

Oh! Anne, who’s with you? I think I see a man!

Anneliese turned and saw Jonathan coming out of the kitchen after washing the dishes.

He was tall, standing at the counter pouring water, his silhouette falling into the camera’s view.
