He struggled to suppress the heat rising through his body; his eyes, however, churned with restless desire.

“Just wait till tonight.”

Natalie froze for a beat, then caught on immediately.

She grinned, taking a step forward with smug delight. Grabbing Baron by the collar, she yanked him close until her breath brushed his face.

Her smile turned wicked.

“Tonight, we’ll see who ends up on top. Remember to clean yourself up–because tonight, I’m the one calling the shots.”

Baron couldn’t help but laugh. The same woman who once made him get a nosebleed from just a glance was now daring to tease him like this?

“Fine! Then I’ll wait for you to call the shots tonight.”

He gave her a playful swat on the backside; the perfect bounce under his palm was deeply satisfying, but it sent a flush rushing up Natalie’s neck.

“Baron! You-”

Natalie glanced around, flustered, making sure no one had seen them. Only then did she grab his hand and march toward the living room.

As she walked, she warned in a hushed voice, “I’m telling you, my parents are at war right now. When we go in, just sit quietly next to me; if you get caught in the crossfire, don’t say I didn’t warn you.”

Baron laughed even harder at that. She thinks she’s the one in control?

“All right. I’ll be quiet as a mouse.”

Hand in hand, they returned to the living room. To their surprise, Ruby and Waylon hadn’t come to blows; the shouting had stopped completely. Waylon and Flynn sat stiffly on the couch, looking like two guilty schoolboys under Ruby’s icy stare, desperate to disappear.

When they spotted Baron, their eyes lit up instantly. A savior!

“Baron’s back?”

“Baron’s home?”

Both Waylon and Flynn jumped to their feet, ready to greet him.

“Sit.”

Ruby’s single, cold command snapped through the air.

Father and son immediately sat back down, hands neatly folded on their knees.

Baron had to fight not to laugh.

He cleared his throat lightly and said, “Mom, I’m back.”

At once, Ruby’s expression melted from fury to delight.

“Baron, you’re back? You don’t look well–are you tired? Hey, make him some chicken soup! And get the guest room ready so he can rest.”

As she gave out orders, the housekeeper hurried off to obey.

Baron quickly realized Ruby was trying to send him out of the room–to give the others

space.

He gave Waylon and Flynn a helpless look and said with a smile, “Thanks, Mom, that’s very thoughtful. I did get a bit injured though–maybe Natalie can help me change the bandages.”

“What? You’re hurt?”

Ruby’s face changed instantly. She forgot all about scolding Waylon and kicked him sharply

instead.

“What are you still standing there for? Baron’s hurt and you’re not calling a doctor?”

Then she shot a glare at Flynn.
