NICOLE
“Hello? Sebastian? Yes, that’s right. It’s me. How has my favorite godson been?”

I have a few sips of my cold coffee as I listen to Katie speak to her godson. The smile on her face really breathes life into her features. She has pale blue eyes paired with really pale skin, but they don’t make her look dead. On the contrary-everything about her is vivid and bright.
“Yeah, well. That’s true,” she’s saying. I zoned out for a bit, so I didn’t catch the rest. “Well, I have good news. I’m sitting here with a wonderful woman who’ll serve you and your company well. That position still isn’t taken, right?” My face reddens and a smile tugs at the corners of my lips. “Well, give her a shot. Interview her. I’m sure you’ll be impressed. When?” She glances at her gold watch. “Yep. Sounds good. She’ll be there. We’ll see each other on Sunday. Bye, take care.”
After hanging up, she does a little shimmy. “Well, I have good news. You have a job interview in about thirty minutes.”
“What?” I burst out. “I…I don’t even have my CV with me.”
“Don’t worry about it. Sebastian isn’t necessarily worried about experience. He wants someone efficient. And I’m confident he’ll give you the job as soon as he sets his eyes on you. Trust yourself. Speak confidently. And most importantly, be yourself.”
I tilt my head to the side and tears fill my eyes. “I don’t know how to thank you, Katie.”
“It’s simple-you don’t have to. You’re like a daughter to me, Nicole. I only want what’s best for you. Your Ma was the best friend I ever had. I lost a piece of myself when she left us.”
We hold hands. I’m already super emotional and talking about Ma just made it worse. “Sometimes I wonder what she’d think about what I’m doing with my life.”
‘She’d love you regardless. You know that. Come, no tears. You don’t have to walk into my godson’s office with puffy eyes. Don’t worry, I’ll drive you there. Hurry, we don’t want to be late.”
I get in Katie’s car and sit with my hands on my lap. I feel great. Hopeful. Even if this interview doesn’t work out, I’ll always be grateful for her kind words and her attentiveness.
The only thing I didn’t tell her was about the pregnancy. That, I don’t think I can share with anyone just yet. I have a lot of thinking to do.
A few minutes later, we arrive. The building is impressive, and that makes me more nervous. Then again, Katie was the daughter of a socialite-her godson is probably someone influential,
She grips my hand and squeezes it, “Don’t be nervous. Sebastian is a good boy. Oh, I’d like you to come to my house on Saturday for dinner. I should’ve mentioned it earlier.”
I smile. “Of course. I’ll be there.”
“Good luck!”

“Thank you, Katie. You’re an angel.”
She waves me off and I get out of the car. I’m glad I didn’t come to meet her in jeans and a shirt, though I was close to. I’m in a black pencil skirt and a blouse that could be more formal, but sadly isn’t. I walk toward the building, explain to the security guard that I have an interview, and when he confirms it, I’m free to head to the elevator.
I focus on breathing on my way up. This building is definitely high-end, so at this point, I don’t know what to expect. To be fair, I’m not really nervous, and I’m not expecting anything.
I’ll take Katie’s advice. I’ll just be as natural as I can, and focus on being myself.
I give the secretary my name, and she tells me to wait a moment in the lobby. I look around, taking in the wall made entirely of wood slats as well as the smooth black floor. There’s a huge digital display on the wall, and everything looks sleek and modern.
Crowe and Co. Technologies is the name of the company. I try to think of what I know about tech companies. It’s got to do with software and security…right!?
The wooden door of an office across from me opens and a man dressed in a dark blue dress shirt, dark pants, and polished shoes steps toward me. He seems to be distractedly looking at a document in his hand, but then he glances at me, and his gaze sticks.
“I take it you’re Nicole?” he says as he approaches me.
I stand up and try not to let my nervousness show as I shake his hand. I thought he’d look more like a nerd, but he doesn’t. This man is extremely handsome. His voice is deep and smooth, and he smells like a million dollars. It’s a fresh, green scent. Much like his office.
“Yes,” I squeak before clearing my throat. “Nicole Monroe.”
“I’m Sebastian Crowe. Please, follow me.”
I head inside his office and he closes the door behind me. His arm brushes against mine and he smiles apologetically before making his way to his seat. He’s got all sorts of technological devices all around: huge screens, more than one computer. Other things that…I’ve got no idea what they are, actually. Papers are everywhere. On the table. Scattered across the floor.
“Apologies for the mess,” he remarks before sitting down. “This interview came out of nowhere. I didn’t have time to tidy things up.”
He’s so polite that I don’t know how to act. I feel like a wildling before this man. “It’s alright. I’m sorry if this is an inconvenience to you.”
“It really isn’t. Katie is…I’d do anything for her.” Something flashes across his dark brown eyes and he smiles softly. He’s got a light stubble on his cheeks and chin, and his nose is straight, but the tip is fleshy instead of pointy. “How do you know her?”
I briefly explain her association with Wings of Grace, and he snaps his fingers. “Ah, yes. I remember. I met your mother once.”
“You did?” I ask, surprised.

Chapter 33
“Yes. At the time, I was always at Katie’s. I was sorry to hear of her passing.”
“Thank you,” I say, trying not to feel sad all over again.
Sebastian nods slowly, his eyes still on my face. “She mentioned you once.”
“Who? My mother?”
