After a while of that man staring at me, my priority becomes getting the hell out of this event so I won’t have to see him again.

It’s not that he’s looking at me casually the way anyone else would-it’s with an intensity that would make anyone’s skin crawl, especially if they were aware of how dangerous he was.

Besides, he reminds me too much of his daughter, and of course, Roman.

I can’t just up and leave, though. I’m here with Sebastian, who, despite how nice he is, still happens to be my boss. This is my first day, and I want to give him a good impression. So, I eat, drink, and try to forget that Garth is even here.

But my determination isn’t enough to keep him away from me.

After the presentations are all done-they flew right over my head, to be honest-it’s time to mingle, and it becomes clear to me that Sebastian is in no rush to head back to the office. As his secretary, I took my notes, but honestly, at some point, I find myself questioning his motives for bringing me.

There’s really not much for me to do.

I spot Garith from the corner of my eye. I’m standing right next to Sebastian, who’s laughing with a group of men he met in college. Garith starts toward me so suddenly that I turn my head in alarm to look at him.

And that doesn’t stop him.

I distance myself from Sebastian to speak to Garith and find out what he wants. There’s no way I would like it if the two of them met-where would Garith say he knew me from? The strip club? As the friend of his friend’s sugar baby?

No, I’d rather avoid such an interaction entirely.

“Nicole, isn’t it?” he asks once we’re face-to-face.

I try to force a smile, but it simply won’t stick. “Hello.”

“I haven’t seen you in a while,” he remarks while his eyes search my face. I see traces of his daughter in his face. She looks like him. “Where have you been? I asked your friend and she didn’t have an answer for me.”

Gosh. The guilt. “I’ve been keeping busy.”

“I can see that,” he claims. He glances over my shoulder, and I assume it’s Sebastian he’s looking at. “What are you doing here?”

Words can’t describe how quickly I need this interaction to end. “My presence here is work-related.”

He jerks his chin in Sebastian’s direction. “That man over there is your coworker?”

Chapter 38

I hear doubt in his voice and it makes me angry. “No, he’s actually my boss.”

“I see,” he remarks. Silence falls upon us after he says this, and we stare at each other without saying a word. I’m thinking of telling him it was nice seeing him before backing away, but he says, “You’re very beautiful, you

know that?”

I suck in a breath and stare at him with what I’m sure is a mix of shock and discomfort on my face. I didn’t expect him to be so straightforward.

He adds, “I was interested in you for a while there. I couldn’t get you out of my head. I’m sure you realized that I was interested in you.”

“I…” My face grows hot. What the hell can I answer to something this out of pocket? “I don’t know what to say to that, Garith. I really don’t.”

A small smile tugs at the corners of his lips and his gaze sharpens. Garith Lowett is a handsome man, but I could never be with him. Again, I can’t be with someone I don’t love, and I wouldn’t be with him even if it was just to anger Roman.

Imagine that: Me, his father-in-law’s little pet. He’d definitely find out, and maybe then, he’d feel the betrayal I felt.

But why would he when he clearly didn’t care about me? He was playing with me to get back at my brother.

So, why should I waste more of my time and live for him?

Sebastian appears beside me before I can think of a response. He gives Garith a pointed look, then glances at me. I make the introductions. “Sebastian, this is Garith Lowett.”

They shake hands. Sebastian doesn’t say much to him apart from a few polite words. Garith looks at me, then says, “Well, I guess I’ll see you when I see you, Nicole.”

I nod and he walks away. I turn to Sebastian and his eyes immediately study me. “Are you alright? You looked uncomfortable even from a distance.”

I don’t want to make a big deal out of this, so I tell him, “I’m fine. Don’t worry about me. He’s just someone I met through an acquaintance.”

“Lowett,” he says as we return to his group. “Could he be…is he related to Carmen Lowett? The woman I introduced you to the other day?”

“I have no idea,” I lie. I really don’t want to talk about this. Sebastian shrugs, and then we continue with our day. He speaks to a few more people, and I accompany him and try to pay attention to everything that he’s saying.

But from the corner of my eye, I can see Garith staring at me. It’s just that I refuse to look over at him because I don’t want to give him the wrong idea. I’m not flirting with him or even playing hard to get.

I don’t want anything to do with him. It’s as simple as that.

Sebastian and I leave, but it’s time for me to head home. The work day’s over, since it’s already five. He offers
