Chapter 46

NICOLE

A few days later, I’m home.

And I don’t mean that crappy motel-I’m back living with Mason and Haley. He told me that if I refused, he’d never speak to me again, and this time, I believed him.

Anyway, I didn’t accept his offer simply because he forced me to say yes. I miss him. Miss them. They’ve been a major part of my life for so long.

I haven’t been able to properly cope without them.

But though I’m happy to be home, I’m still devastated by everything that happened. Every time I think about the miscarriage, my heart breaks all over again and I’m overwhelmed with guilt. It doesn’t even matter that Dan is in jail right now-I have this feeling, no, this certainty, that I lost the baby because I was so uncertain about the pregnancy to begin with.

So, it was taken from me so I won’t have to decide anymore.

Of course, this isn’t true at all. I’m just trying to hold onto any explanation that’ll give this situation some sense, but that’s just how life is. Things happen and there’s no reason why.

But now that we’re away from the hospital and I’m here, it’s time for my brother to tell me what truly went down between him and Roman.

I should’ve listened when he tried to tell me, but I was so offended and irritated by his jeering that I just assured he would lie. I’m not sure what was going through my head when I packed to leave, right before calling Roman.

Feels like it happened ages ago.

Mason’s seated across from me, and Haley is standing with her back resting against the kitchen counter. I have a cup of cocoa warming my hands, and I look back and forth between them as I try to piece this together.

And they look…sad. Really sad.

Mason clears his throat, then looks over at Haley. “I’d prefer it if you weren’t here, Hales. I want this to be just between me

and her.”

Haley walks away like she doesn’t need to be told twice. I hear their bedroom door closing, and then Mason turns his full attention to me. He runs a hand down his face and groans. He looks like he’s aged five years since I last saw him, and it makes me feel so damn guilty. “Nicole…this is a fucked up situation that I never wanted you to be a part of. I know you’re not to blame, alright? You always asked me what happened between me and him, and I refused to answer you. It doesn’t matter, alright? What matters is that you’ll find out now.”

It’s hard not to shake my head at him. Despite the seriousness of the situation, watching my brother crash out will always be hilarious. Mason just can’t deal with anger at all.

He rubs his forehead a few more times before saying, “It all started during our second year at college. We’d spend every waking moment together, except when we had classes. You know how tight we were. Roman was…fuck. He was my best friend. I’m not afraid to admit that”

I don’t say a word, but I find myself wondering what could’ve happened to tear them apart to this extent.

I guess I’ll find out soon enough.

Mason struggles to find his words. “We went to a party once, and that’s where I met Hales. And I want to put emphasis on that-I met her first. But I was too fucking shy to approach her because…look at her? She’s perfect and I got nervous, alright?”

I frown and the words tumble out of my lips before I can stop myself. “Wait…this is about Haley?”

He gives me a look. “Can I finish the story?”

“What the hell happened?” I ask impatiently, already getting annoyed.

“I tried to approach her and couldn’t, and I commented how perfect she was to Roman, but I didn’t point her out to him. Long story short, he saw her, too, did what I couldn’t, and they started seeing each other.”

My jaw hits my lap. I can’t fucking believe he’s saying this to me right now. I look at Mason like he’s a stranger. It kind of feels like everything that I’ve lived so far with him was a lie.

“I can’t believe you,” I say. “What happened next?”

His face is growing redder by the minute. “Roman’s always been a dick, so it was only a matter of time before he started showing her his fucked up side. They’d have arguments, and I was always there, picking up the pieces he left.” He gives me a look. “I loved her, Nicole. I fell in love with her from the moment I saw her, and he was breaking her to pieces! How could I stand there and watch that when I knew I could treat her better?”

“You hooked up?”

He nods. “Yeah. But by then, they weren’t really together anymore.”

‘She cheated on Roman with you.”

Mason gives me a look, but doesn’t comment. Then again, what can he say to this? No wonder Haley was so eager to leave when he asked her a few minutes ago.

Moments of silence pass. I feel sick to my stomach in a way I can’t explain. Mason finishes the fucked-up tale by adding, Eventually, he found out, and he and I fought. He wanted her back, but she was in love with me, too. Then he swore to me that he’d get back at me. That he’d make me pay for what I did.”

I’m confused,’ I say bitterly. “Why were you mad at him all this time when you’re the one who ruined your friendship?”

His eyes grow wide. “Did you hear a thing I said?

Do you have any idea just how fucking badly he treated her?”

I search his eyes. I can see the panic in them. “There’s something else you aren’t telling me.”

He exhales sharply and turns his head to the side. I say angrily, “You might as well just tell me, since you’re trying to get all the facts right. What happened?”

“This part isn’t mine to tell, he grits out.

I frown and scoff. “What? That doesn’t make any sense.”
