A Caged Songbird's Escape: Into the Arms of a Predator novel Chapter 291

Tanya Foster couldn’t shake the feeling that this man had lost his mind.

The divorce was final, yet he still acted like the wounded husband, playing out some melodramatic scene of deep devotion.

The wine at dinner had barely affected her; to Tanya, it might as well have been fruit juice. Her mind was clear and quick, her expression as calm as ever. “There was an emergency at the lab. She rushed over.”

If you put aside the occasional teasing, in Tanya’s eyes, Elissa and Rowan’s relationship was—at best—Rowan looking out for Elissa for nine years. They’d grown up together, supporting each other along the way.

But not everyone saw it that way. And if the wrong person heard about it at the wrong time, it would be prime fodder for gossip.

Especially Frank, the ex-husband.

Frank narrowed his eyes, though his face remained as composed and gentlemanly as ever. “Alright. Sorry to trouble you.”

With that, he turned and walked away—calm on the surface—but headed straight for the underground parking lot.

He sped off, driving towards the research institute.

Even though Tanya Foster had played her part flawlessly, something still didn’t sit right with him. His instincts screamed that something was off.

He needed to know exactly where his little Elissa was, what she was doing, and, most importantly, who she was with.

Murphy Group had security on duty around the clock.

At night, patrols were even stricter to prevent anyone from sneaking in and causing trouble when most employees were gone.

Especially now, with the R&D department’s latest project—the higher-ups had made it crystal clear: this was the top priority, and nothing could be allowed to go wrong.

So, as soon as Frank’s car pulled up to the gate, a guard stopped him. “Can I help you, sir?”

“I’m here to see someone,” Frank replied.

“Who? Which department?”

“The R&D department. Elissa.”
