“Mm-hmm.”
Elissa nodded earnestly. “I’ve had a few patients with conditions similar to Mrs. Wilkinson’s before, so I’m confident I can help her recover.”
“Suzanne!”
Standing before his wife, Tristan Wilkinson seemed to shed all his usual sharpness. His eyes reddened with joy as he looked down at Suzanne. “Did you hear that? In six months, you’ll be able to start standing again. This trip was worth it.”
Nearby, Jesse Wilkinson—always so composed and reserved—looked at his parents. “I’ll stay with Mom here in Vistapeak City while she goes through treatment.”
It was just as well; their branch office here needed some attention.
Some people had gotten a little too comfortable, taking advantage of the Wilkinson family’s long absences from the city.
Tristan hesitated. “Isn’t your brother still in Vistapeak City? He’s a doctor, too. Wouldn’t it make sense for him to look after your mother?”
Jesse’s expression grew helpless. “Have you seen him around lately?”
Only then did Tristan realize his younger son was missing. He’d been with them when they walked to the lounge, hadn’t he?
That troublemaker.
Where had he run off to this time?
Said troublemaker was currently leaning against a hallway wall, watching the slender figure on the balcony, phone pressed to her ear.
Tanya Foster had always been painfully thin when she was younger.
He used to complain she was all bones when he hugged her. She’d put on a few pounds since then, but she still looked fragile—like he could lift her up with one arm.
Tonight, Tanya had squeezed in time to attend Elissa’s celebration dinner, but her phone hadn’t stopped ringing—colleagues, clients, one after another.
She braced herself against the balcony rail, speaking into her phone with practiced patience. “Yes, that’s right. We’ll discuss the details in person tomorrow. I can’t make any guarantees about winning the case just yet…”
Rex couldn’t help but wonder when she’d become so patient.
