As we pulled away from the warehouse, I couldn’t help but glance back at the building where we’d just interrogated a man. The whole experience felt surreal.
“You’re quiet,” Alexander observed as we merged onto the main road.
“Just processing,” I replied, staring out the window. “It’s not every day I witness an interrogation.”
Alexander’s lips twitched. “I suppose not.”
“Do you really not remember her? Selena?” I asked, genuinely curious.
“Not at all,” he admitted. “High school was a long time ago, and I wasn’t particularly interested in making lasting connections.”
I studied his profile as he drove, the sharp line of his jaw tense beneath the sun streaming through the windshield. The revelation about Selena had clearly rattled him, even if he wouldn’t admit it.
“Do you think she’s behind drugging you?” I asked, turning slightly in my seat to face him. “This Selena person?”
Alexander’s fingers tapped against the steering wheel as he considered my question. “I can’t be sure, ” he said finally. “She might be the mastermind, or she might be working for someone else. We can’t jump to conclusions until we know her motivations, which won’t be easy to uncover.”
“What about what Anthony suggested?” I pressed. “About someone trying to… You know, have sex with you while drugged and then claim pregnancy or something? That seems extreme, but…”
“For money, people will go to extremes you can’t imagine,” Alexander said, his voice hardening.” And I’m not just talking about women. This could be orchestrated by a man using Selena as a pawn. The business world is full of sharks looking for any advantage.”
He turned onto a main boulevard, the city coming alive around us. After the eerie isolation of the warehouse district, the bustling streets felt comfortingly normal.
“It’s hard to believe someone would go to such lengths,” I said. “Drugging you, potentially causing a scandal, crashing your company’s stock…”
Alexander chuckled darkly. “You’d be surprised what people consider reasonable when millions or billions are at stake.”
His words sent a chill down my spine. The casual way he spoke about such extreme measures made me wonder how often he’d faced similar situations in his cutthroat business world.

I pulled out my phone, suddenly remembering I hadn’t checked it before entering the warehouse. The screen lit up with several notifications.
“Expecting something important?” Alexander asked, glancing between me and the road.
“I just realized I hadn’t checked my phone before we went in,” I explained, scrolling through the notifications. Three new messages, but none from Jackson-just promotional offers from stores I’d shopped at recently.
Alexander’s eyes flicked to my phone. “Nothing from Jackson?”
I looked up, surprised. “No, just some sales notifications. Why are you asking about him?”
“Just curious.” His tone was casual, but his fingers tightened slightly on the steering wheel. “You two seemed quite… engaged in conversation earlier.”
“He’s just a friend,” I said, placing my phone in my lap. “We’ve known each other for years.”
“A friend who disappeared for years and suddenly wants to reconnect?” Alexander raised an eyebrow. “Interesting timing.”
I crossed my arms. “Why does it matter to you? We’re not really dating. This is an arrangement, remember?”
“An arrangement with very specific terms,” he countered smoothly. “One of which is exclusivity.”
“I know what I signed, Mr. Knight.”
“Do you?” His voice remained even, but there was an edge to it now. “Because it seems like you’re entertaining the idea of seeing another man.”
I rolled my eyes. “You’re overreacting. I’m just chatting with an old friend.”
“I’m overreacting?” He let out a short laugh. “You’re the one getting defensive about a simple question.”
“Because you’re acting possessive over something completely innocent!” My voice rose slightly. ” Jackson texted me. I responded. That’s it.”
Alexander fell silent for a moment, his eyes fixed on the road ahead. The tension in the car was palpable.
“Are you planning to meet him this weekend?” he finally asked, his tone deliberately casual.
I hesitated. “I haven’t thought about it. If I do, it would just be as friends. It’s not a date.”
“As friends,” he repeated, skepticism evident in his voice. “Does he know that?”

“Of course he dors”
“Really?” Alexander’s tone was challenging “Because most men don’t send flirtatious messages to women they see is just friends,
1 felt my cheeks flush. “How do you know his messages are flirtatious?”
“Your reaction tells me everything I need to know.” His lips curved into a knowing smile. “You blushed when you read his text earlier. Friends don’t usually make you blush, Madison.”
I stared out the window, annoyed that he’d noticed such a detail. “It doesn’t matter. I haven’t agreed to meet him yet. I might not even go.”
“You might not?” He glanced at me, his expression hardening. “Let me be clear, Madison. You’re my girlfriend. You can’t go on a date with him.”
The possessive tone in his voice caught me off guard. “Excuse me?”
“You heard me.” His voice was firm, unyielding. “Our contract specifically prohibits dating or sleeping with other people. That applies to both of us.
I felt a flash of annoyance at his tone. “You don’t have to remind me, Mr. Knight. I remember what I signed, and I have no intention of breaking the terms.”
Alexander’s lips curved into a satisfied smile. “Good girl.”
The condescension in his voice made me want to throw something at him. I bit my tongue instead, turning to look out the window as the city blurred past us. He was completely overreacting to nothing Jackson was just an old friend; even if he was flirting, I wasn’t planning to act on it.
“You know,” I said after a moment, “you seem awfully concerned about my social life for someone who claims this is just a business arrangement.”
Alexander’s eyes remained fixed on the road. “I’m protecting my investment.”
“Your investment?” I laughed. “Is that what I am now?”
“You know what I mean.” His hand moved from the gear shift to my knee, giving it a light squeeze.” Our arrangement is valuable to both of us. I’m simply ensuring we both honor it.”
