Chapter 60
Madison
The drive back to the resort was quiet, but Alexander’s hand never left my thigh. His fingers traced lazy circles on my skin, inching higher with each pass until I had to cross my legs to maintain my
composure.
“Las Vegas is beautiful at night,” he said, his breath hot against my ear. “The lights, the energy… I want to show you everything.” His hand squeezed my thigh. “We could go out this evening and explore the city.”
I tried to focus on the passing scenery instead of how his touch made my body react. “That sounds nice, Mr. Knight.”
“The view from the High Roller is spectacular.” His fingers dipped between my thighs. “Though not as spectacular as the view I had this morning.”
Heat flooded my cheeks as memories of our morning activities flashed through my mind. “I should call my mother when we get back,” I said, attempting to change the subject. “Check how she’s doing.

“Of course. Take all the time you need.” His hand finally retreated as the car pulled up to the resort entrance. “I have a few calls to make myself.‘

I stepped out of the car, smoothing down my dress and taking a deep breath. The resort’s grand entrance loomed before me, its opulence contrasting my swirling thoughts.
Alexander’s hand found the small of my back, guiding me through the marble–floored lobby. His touch, even through the fabric, sent sparks across my skin.
“Don’t keep me waiting too long,” he murmured, his lips brushing my ear. His voice held that dangerous edge that made my knees weak. “You know how impatient I get.”
I watched him stride toward the elevators, his confident gait drawing appreciative glances from women passing by. The doors closed behind him, and I finally let out the breath I’d been holding.
The lounge area beckoned with its plush furnishings and floor–to–ceiling windows. I chose a secluded corner chair, sinking into the buttery leather. The space oozed luxury crystal chandeliers cast warm light over abstract art pieces, while water features created a soothing backdrop. A few other guests dotted the area, most focused on their phones or laptops.
My phone felt heavy in my purse as I pulled it out. The lounge’s bar caught my eye – all gleaming copper and backlit bottles. A martini sounded tempting, but the memory of Alexander’s hungry gaze made me reconsider. I needed my wits about me.

A couple at the bar caught my attention – the woman laughing too loudly at whatever her companion said. Her hand rested on his arm, much like Alexander’s had been on my thigh during breakfast. The thought made heat rise to my cheeks.
The plush chair enveloped me as I tried to focus on calling Mom. But my mind drifted to Alexander’s words at breakfast, his promises of showing me Las Vegas at night. The way his eyes had darkened when I’d licked that sauce from my lips.
“Pull yourself together,” I muttered, earning a curious glance from a passing server. Right. Phone call. Mother. Focus on anything except the way Alexander’s hands felt on my skin or how he’d promised to make me scream his name later.
The leather chair squeaked as I crossed my legs, trying to ignore the lingering ache between them. Trust Alexander Knight to turn a simple breakfast into foreplay. The man could make reading a phone book sound like a sin.
I stared at my phone screen, willing myself to dial. But all I could think about was his parting words: “Don’t keep me waiting too long.”
I shook my head, annoyed at how easily he got under my skin. This was about checking on Mom, not dwelling on Alexander’s everything.
My finger hit the call button before I could overthink it further.
“Madison!” Two voices chorused through the speaker, making me pull the phone away from my ear.
“Mom? Hazel?”
“So, how’s Sin City treating you?” Hazel’s voice came through clear and teasing. “Won big yet?”
“Haven’t had the chance to gamble,” I said, settling deeper into the chair. “Just got here last night.”
“Oh please,” Mom chimed in. “Who cares about gambling when she’s there with that gorgeous boss of hers?”
I could practically hear Hazel’s eyebrows waggling. “Speaking of Mr. Tall–Dark–and–Loaded…”
“We’re not speaking of him,” I cut in quickly. “Why are you both on the phone?”
“TV became boring, so Hazel brought me the romance novels I asked for,” Mom said. “We’re having a little book club meeting.”
“Mom, you’re supposed to be resting. Dr. Williams specifically said you need to take it easy.
“Oh, Maddie, I am resting. I’m lying in this fancy bed, surrounded by these incredibly soft pillows, while Hazel and I discuss whether the duke should choose the wallflower or the feisty redhead.”

“The feisty redhead, obviously,” Hazel chimed in. “She’s got spunk.”
I rolled my eyes. “As long as you’re not overdoing it.”

“Madison, dear, reading is hardly running a marathon. Besides, these stories keep my blood pressure interesting.”
“Mom!”
“What? I’m just saying these books are very educational.”
“Please stop talking.” I pinched the bridge of my nose, grateful they couldn’t see my face turning red.
“So,” Hazel cut in, “have you explored Vegas yet? Hit the slots? Seen any shows?”
“I’m here for work, not pleasure. We have meetings scheduled-”
“Boring!” They chorused.
“Come on, Mads,” Hazel said. “It’s Vegas! You can’t just sit in conference rooms all day. At least go see the fountains or something.”
“The Strip is gorgeous at night,” Mom added. “Remember when your father and I went for our anniversary?”
“Yes, and I remember the story about how you lost your shoe in the fountain.‘
“That fountain had it coming,” Mom huffed. “Besides, that nice Elvis impersonator fished it out for
me.”
“Promise us you’ll at least see some sights if you get free time,” Hazel insisted. “Take pictures. Live a little.”
I sighed, knowing they wouldn’t let up until I agreed. “Fine. If I get some free time, I’ll do some sightseeing.”
“That’s my girl,” Mom said. “Now, about this duke in chapter three-”
“And that’s my cue to go. Love you both, behave yourselves.”
Their laughter followed me as I hung up. A smile tugged at my lips – those two were impossible. I’d asked Hazel to keep Mom from overdoing things, but instead, they’d formed a romance novel book club. At least Mom sounded happy and energetic, which was more than I could say for her condition a few weeks ago.
