Her soft reminder jerked Stephan and Gloria back to their senses.

Stephan was a past master at keeping up appearances in public. He fixed his eyes on Annelise. “Since you’re from a small town and don’t know any better, we won’t hold it against you.”

Then he turned to Gloria. “Next time, be more careful about who you help. Sometimes kindness bites

you back.”

Gloria was still staring at Annelise, the hatred in her eyes impossible to hide.

Annelise let her. She was drop–dead gorgeous, her eyes deep and unreadable.

That cool attitude almost made Gloria lose it again.

“Mom, chill. She’s nobody. Don’t waste your energy.” Juliette slipped her arm through Gloria’s. “Madam Kendrick has got a head on her shoulders. She’s not gonna swallow some random rumor and think badly of you.”
