Chapter 104
Annelise looked at the old-fashioned little notebook and said, “Grandma, I have money.”
“You used to, but now you’ve been kicked out, and that family even canceled your credit cards.”
Her grandma stroked her long hair. “You’re just trying to make your grandma happy.”
Annelise’s smile didn’t fade. “Grandma, I…”
Before Annelise could explain, the old woman’s Jitterbug phone started ringing, shrill and piercing.
The old woman glanced at the caller ID, the warmth in her eyes clearly gone. She started to get up, wanting to take the call away from the kids.
Annelise was sharp. “Is it Gloria?”
Seeing she couldn’t hide it, the old woman simply nodded.
Annelise gave a faint smile. “Grandma, answer it. Lenny and I are grown up now. Whatever it is, we’ll face it with you.”
Hearing her granddaughter say that, the old woman’s heart warmed. She suddenly found the strength and answered the call she’d been dreading.
“Well, well, you finally decided to answer my call. Anyone who didn’t know better would think I, your daughter-in- law, wasn’t taking good care of you.”
Gloria’s sharp, harsh voice came through the phone. “The House of Sterling just contacted me. They said you tried to borrow money from them to reopen the clinic and asked if I would lend it to you.”
Gloria sneered. “Mom, have you forgotten that you killed a patient with your medicine?”
The old woman’s fingers started to tremble, her voice low. “This has nothing to do with you.”
“Nothing to do with me?”
Gloria was getting angry. “Are you trying to pull strings for that fake?
You’re unbelievable, old woman. You won’t help your own biological granddaughter, but you’ll help a fake!”
The old woman took a deep breath. “To me, Annelise is my real granddaughter!”
“You can have that fake if you want her. I’m calling to tell you not to use Shichang’s name to borrow money all over town.”
Gloria was in the middle of a beauty treatment, a 1,600-dollar skin-whitening injection, and needed to stay in a good

mood. “The House of Sterling won’t lend you the five thousand dollars. But that traditional courtyard residence of yours… you’re old now, shouldn’t you write a will and leave it to Julic? Your real granddaughter has been back for so long, and you haven’t given her a thing. How does that look?”
The mocking tone made the old woman’s fingers clench so tightly they turned red. “You’re well off, you don’t need my little residence. Don’t call me again, or don’t blame me for being rude!”
“Oh, Mom, if you’ve really got the guts, then show me. How exactly are you going to be rude?”
Gloria scoffed. “That tiny, rundown massage shop of yours? You think it can actually become popular or something?”
“Then we’ll see.”
Abruptly, the voice on the other end of the line changed. It was cool, light, and wasted no words.
