With the audience gone, Stephan dropped the pretense. “Starting today, we will act as if we never raised you. We go our separate ways!”
Annelise offered no rebuttal. She was done with this family.
Walton, who had just arrived on his electric scooter, frowned disapprovingly. He parked it and frowned. “Sir, is that any way to speak to … to Annie? So rude.‘
As a miracle–working doctor, Annelise was notoriously low–key outside the Silverwood Heights community, insisting everyone call her Annie.
Walton had almost slipped up.
Stephan, however, misinterpreted the situation. He glanced at Walton and his scooter. “So this is your real father? Riding some beat–up electric scooter?”
He thought, “He couldn’t even afford a proper car. No wonder she is so embarrassingly uncouth.
“A country bumpkin still wearing that outdated suit?”
Stephan’s disdain was palpable.
Walton was momentarily speechless.
“Him? Dr. Caldwell’s real father?” he wondered in shock.
His
eyes widened. He wished he could claim that honor! He wasn’t worthy. If his own son had even half of Annelise’s talent, he’d die a happy man.
Ignoring Walton’s stunned expression, Stephan snorted dismissively, turned, and signaled to the security guard. A man of his status didn’t brawl with commoners in the street. It was beneath him.
The guard obsequiously held the door open. Once Stephan was inside the lobby, the guard turned, pointing arrogantly at Annelise and Walton. “What are you staring at? I told you, you don’t belong here. Why are you still hanging around?”
Walton laughed humorlessly. He flashed his official ID: a two–star insignia marking him as a

high–ranking city official.
Even the guard recognized the symbol. His legs went weak. “S… Sir… I didn’t know you were an official… I’ll just…”
Walton glanced sideways. “Caesar Hotel is a city–designated key establishment. It seems an inspection is in order.”
The guard broke into a cold sweat. “Sir, I…”
The important official then turned politely to the young girl. “Dr. Caldwell, one moment, if you please.”
Annelise, perfectly composed, gestured for him to proceed.
The guard paled upon hearing the title.
He wondered in shock, “Who did I just try to block? Even this high–ranking official addressed her as Doctor!
“But Ms. Wilson said this girl is just some poor distant relative.
“OMG! I’m finished.”
Knowing his job was lost, the guard slumped to the floor in despair.
Walton summoned the hotel manager and, with a few quiet words, had the guard escorted
away.
He wasn’t surprised to find Annelise here. “Dr. Caldwell, are you also here to consult on Mr. Winthrop’s case?”
“Originally. Not anymore,” she replied casually.
Walton didn’t press for details, just smiled. “Shall we head back then? It’s almost time for your clinic. Donnie and the others are waiting in the community square. In this heat, I’m worried they might get heatstroke.”
