Chapter 29 A Glimpse of Understanding
“It’s not certain I can treat it,” Annelise said, leaning against the wall, one long leg bent lazily. She stifled a yawn. “The cause is unclear, the diagnosis uncertain. And also…”
Adrian chuckled softly, finishing her thought. “And you’re also tired and don’t feel like consulting on another case today.”
“See? This is why I like talking to smart people,” Annelise said, her smile returning. Her fingers found his wrist again, performing a careful initial examination. “Your condition demands patience. It can’t be forced.”
He seemed like someone even fate hesitated to claim.
That was likely the only reason he was still standing here.
His strength of will was palpable, a deep self–reliance that outweighed any faith in higher
powers.
The rosary beads on his wrist might suggest a seeker of divine comfort, but their true purpose was more practical: a subtle scent of soothing herbs meant to aid sleep lingered from them, something Annelise detected easily from her proximity.
“Focus on improving your sleep and nutrition first,” she advised, massaging her own neck wearily. “Proper rest and a good diet will provide a better foundation.”
Noting her evident exhaustion, he gave a soft response. “Understood.”
He was closer than Annelise expected. She looked down to find he had already taken her bag from her hand.
“Blaine, ensure Dr. Caldwell gets home safely,” Adrian instructed, his tone leaving no room for debate.
Blaine knew better than to argue. “Yes, sir.”
“Really, it’s unnecessary. I’m just going across the street!” Annelise declined, maintaining a professional distance. “Mr. Braun can take me there.”
“Absolutely!” Jonathon chimed in eagerly. “You can count on me!”

Adrian simply nodded in acknowledgment.
Seizing a chance, Blaine ventured, “Sir, perhaps you should exchange contact details with Dr. Caldwell?”
This prompted Adrian to turn his attention back to Annelise.
Without hesitation, she offered her phone. “Input your number. When I return to check on the older gentleman, I can assess your situation as well.”
It was typically a privilege reserved for very few, with most inquiries filtered through his assistant, Tommy.
Witnessing the formidable head of the Winthrop family personally entering his digits into someone else’s device was an unprecedented sight.
Patrick, unable to contain his curiosity, tried and failed to discreetly peek at the screen. “If only I could get that number too!” he thought.
Annelise moved the phone away, raising an eyebrow. “Mr. Pennington? Is there something you need?”
“I, uh… Perhaps you should have my number as well! For any school–related matters!” he stammered, never imagining his technical school would be his main point of relevance.
Annelise accepted his number with the same impartial courtesy.
Stepping into the elevator, she cast a final glance back at the man illuminated in the dim light.
He held himself with a quiet, profound understanding of the world, maintaining a perfect distance, engaged yet detached.
He conversed with the surrounding doctors without a hint of his immense status influencing the interaction.
His intellect and perception clearly dwarfed those around him, yet he listened with genuine
attention.
Such grace under prolonged duress was rare.
